Misery Business

‘The doldrums they call me, remember you’re mine’.

Our cousins from Cornwall, 50 Year Storm have been mightily busy, they have a new song out now called ‘Doldrums’ and what better way to serenade this misery we have all been enduring. It’s been extremely tough, for those of us who have come through the other side of lockdown, we are still struggling, we are still suffering.
This song, written by drummer Emma Limn, is arguably the most poignant post lockdown track for me, she pinpoints the feeling of eternal turmoil so eloquently and her bandmates, Andy Limn on guitar and Damon Morey handling vocals and keyboard duties, help deliver the track, with gritty, anxiety-fuelled notions and nuance. It has gentle notes, scattered amongst the hyper Grunge giving us a solid bassline and vocal perception, that is attributable to the Alt-Rock sound.
We are transported to a time of fables with lyres and sirens, a fantasy world is more attractive as our reality has been destroyed. We really need to persevere and try to find a way to crawl back to the surface, something better must be waiting there. The idea of re-building a life maybe too much but there is hope in the soundtrack, the music of 50 Year Storm is a constant sense of responsibility, and a mark of our worth, with its own unique restorative properties.
There is life in the doldrums, seek it out my friends.
