Interview: Sano Hill

So how has your latest album/EP gone so far with fans then?

I’ve been absolutely delighted with the response to my latest single ‘Dancer’ and to the 6 singles in total I’ve released over the past year. I’ve been really touched in particular by fans that have got in touch (mainly via social media) to express how much a particular song has connected with them –

Tell us something about the release no one knows?

I’m not sure it’s something nobody knows really as I have mentioned this in previous interviews but the new single ‘Dancer’ emerged from a period of not writing songs and is about that process, about the challenge of trying to bring words together that can do justice to a particular melody – all of my songs begin as melodies which come to me much more easily and then I try to find the lyric that lies hidden within the notes.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Radiohead. Whether lyrically or musically, all their work is extraordinary and to collaborate with them would be – well beyond words really.

How has your latest release been received?

Very very well – the reviews have been fantastic – you can find some on my website here: https://sanohillsongs.wixsite.com/sano-hill/reviews and also on my social media (all links at: https://linktr.ee/SanoHill ) – as an emerging indie musician it’s always challenging to get your music out there and to an audience but I’ve been hugely humbled and encouraged by the response to date.

Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?

‘Dancer’ deals with the challenge of artistic creation, set against the background of a memory of a dance, and the first fires of romantic encounter. It is part love song, part artistic reflection. The idea of ‘dance’ is also a way to connect with creativity, flow – to find a way through in writing a song.

What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?

Right now dates are yet to be confirmed but I’m working on that around the release of my album (summer 2023). Dates will be announced on my website: https://linktr.ee/SanoHill

What venue are you most looking forward to playing the most, and why?

Probably Róisin Dubh in Galway – it’s a fantastic Galway city original music venue that I’ve played previously but not in some time.

What else can we expect from you in 2023?

The big ambition of 2023 is to get the album – ‘If Not Now, When?’ – out. It’s nearly there – final mixing and mastering is ongoing and I’m incredibly fortunate to be collaborating with a fantastic and hugely talented Irish producer Larry Hogan who has brought my songs in really unexpected but glorious directions. I’m also grateful to Braddon Williams (who has previously worked with a range of top artists, including Beyonce, Snoop Dogg, Mark Ronson, Il Divo, Wyclef Jean, Billy Joel, Kelly Clarkson, P Diddy, and The Script) and is currently contributing on the final mixing and mastering process.
