Yuval Lavi talks ‘New World’

When did the initial idea for your latest EP come together?

I started working on the EP almost a year ago. After working on several films, I’ve realized I can’t always have my voice and expression when I write for picture, especially when I need to ensure the director and producer are satisfied. So I’ve decided to start writing an EP as a personal project because I needed a place to express myself in my own way without limitations.

How would you describe the EP, to a reader that is unfamiliar with your work?

The name of the EP is “New World,” it basically describes the path I’ve taken since moving to Los Angeles in 2018, the progress I’ve made, and the person I am today because of all my experiences. The good and the bad. I’m trying to tell my story through the music and evoke the emotions I felt during my journey.

How would you say that the EP compares to anything you’ve done before?

As a film composer, most of your work is to write music for other people and to ensure “THEY” are satisfied with it. Working on the EP allowed me to write music for myself and to express myself without having the limitation of someone else’s opinion and vision.

The EP reflects my own story and my emotions and feelings.

What was the hardest part about putting it together, and why?

It took me much longer to work and released the album than I expected. There was always something I felt could be improved or changed, and it was a challenge to decide which track I should release in the EP and which ones should be released as singles later this year.

Why should a reader check out the EP?

I hope whoever listens to my music can feel the emotions I tried to evoke while writing it. I wanted the person who heard my music to feel exactly how I felt. Without sounding pretentious, I wanted to give my auditions an experience beyond the music.

What else can you tell us about the EP, that we haven’t covered in this interview?

I had several more tracks that were supposed to be in the EP, but I decided to remove them right before the release. I had to hold them off and let them sit on my desk for more time before sharing them. Maybe I wasn’t sure they were good enough, or perhaps I felt they needed their release. I’m not entirely sure what the reason was.
