Interview: A Permanent Shadow

So how has your latest album/EP gone so far with fans then?

No complaints for the time being. “Shining Star” has been out for a bit over a week and has gotten quite a lot of digital plays and some nice comments on social media.

Tell us something about the release no one knows?

The song is almost 20 years old. Back then I was in a band with three girls called The Lowtones, and it was one of the first songs we wrote together. It’s always sad when a band splits up and the repertory dies with it. When it came to selecting songs for the second APS album I remembered “Shining Star” and revived it somewhat. It’s a completely different beast now in terms of mood and arrangements, but the essence is still there.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

I would like to work with The Anchoress from Wales. She’s recorded a couple of amazing albums and I really adore her music. I reached out to her via social media, but no reply yet. Fingers crossed though…

Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?

“Shining Star” is a song about envy and jealousy among friends and family who rather wish to see you fail and drown because it makes them more comfortable in their own misery. It leans a bit on Morrissey’s “We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful” lyrically.

What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?

A Permanent Shadow is pretty much a solo project, self-financed and self-managed by myself and a small group of helpers. So in order to be able to tour there’s a lot of planning and maths to be done. You need to get guarantees from promoters in order to make sure you don’t end up broke after two weeks on the road. That’s the rather boring explanation behind why we’re not touring at the moment.

What venue are you most looking forward to playing the most, and why?

No particular venue comes to my mind, but I’d say our music is more for theatres than for clubs. We like working with visuals and nice lighting effects, and theatres usually provide a better infrastructure.

What else can we expect from in 2021?

We’ll have another single out in November which is a bit more dance-y, which means more interviews and promo. We’re also working on a covers EP at the moment and have been demoing our third album for a while. Even without touring I’m sure we won’t get bored.
