There is something to be said of following certain songwriting formulas to stay true to your genre but when an artist can blend elements from other contemporary genres we can be surprised with a new, unique perspective. As is the case in Matt Westin’s latest release Thin Blue Line, Matt utilizes rhythms and bass funk from new wave and modern rock as the backbone for his deep country offering. When the main melodies do take over, the traditional country does take over, but that little hint of something else still remains. Thin Blue Line is a tribute piece to the brave men and women of the Special Forces, and the frontline workers who help make a community great. A patriotic country offering that tugs at the heartstrings of those closest to the roots of the genre. With the big open chords ringing out over the choruses giving this track that larger-than-life feel and the doubled vocals filling the listening space, this stadium rock-worthy track is bound to get plenty of attention. “A salute to the fallen heroes, for the honor they have earned, with the flashing lights of justice, they wear that badge with pride, standing shoulder to shoulder sharing the sacrifice.” These are bold statements, the rich imagery of the passion our artist feels, and an empathetic approach to those who do not fully understand these sacrifices.
The production on Thin Blue Line is well-executed, as I have previously mentioned the professionally placed vocals boom out over the melodies as Matt Westin is determined to have his message heard and felt by those in attendance. That underlying funk groove from the bass sits well in the pocket and tight with the sharp snare and crisp, clear cymbal hits, while the main guitar keeps that time with each strum of the major chords. Thin Blue Line would make an excellent addition to any Top 40 Country radio playlist, as its infectious sing-along chorus and patriotic, anthemic feel grabs audiences and keeps them rocking throughout the song. With the growing streaming success demonstrated by Mat Westin, Thin Blue Line should help grow his fan base, and garner that much deserved media attention as he continues to perform this track.
