Single Review: LASTELLE – Departure

Atmospheric post-hardcore band, LASTELLE from Oxfordshire, UK, have released their latest single ‘Departure’.

The single is a guttural pit of disequilibrium and upended emotion that revolves around the mental process of losing a loved one; a personal juggernaut that cant be taken lightly.

It is completely quintessential of post-hardcore yet generously unique in its own way with an overwhelmingly honest contemplation of life pouring endless emotion and unanswered questions into sonic existentialism.

It is not for the faint-hearted so don’t be fooled by the cascading vocal hooks and lyrical sensibility as the darkened soundscape lurks closely beneath.

Musically, there is nothing paltry about it. Bringing crashing drums, guttural vocals, and seething guitars to the already powerful dynamic and charging every emotion with a high voltage impact.

Speaking about ‘Departure’ Freddie Whatmore says Another personal song, this song deals with the mental process of losing a loved one. The chorus line “In the end, aren’t we just chasing the time that we’ve spent our life wasting?

“All I hope is that you’re happy now.” is about how the death of someone else can bring an overwhelming sense of your own mortality, and questions whether you’ll feel fulfilled when your life comes to end.

“There were a few different versions of the end of this song, but what we settled on probably ended up as the heaviest part in any of our songs!”

LASTELLE formed in September 2018 and their impressive work has been compared to the likes of Devil Sold His Soul, Casey, Underoath, Being As An Ocean, and The Elijah, as they bring post-rock textures and density into their own pools of emotion.

They have landed coverage with BBC, Dreambound, Caliber TV, Kerrang, Rock Sound, Triple J, as well as playlisting, Apple Music, Deezer and with Spotify, where their streaming plays are totalling over 350,000.

LASTELLE will also be releasing their upcoming EP, ‘DELICATE’, on the 26th February 2021 through Year Of The Rat Records / Beth Shalom Records, which you can pre-order here: http://bethshalomrecords.limitedrun.com/products/search?q=lastelle&fbclid=IwAR0-jdSgTd_iAL9qsdj-Izus3bdqsbwsnpHpriY2K9zFLO3MIhLFcWHGLX4
