Album Reviews of The Young Hearts’ ‘The Modern State’

The Young Hearts are releasing their debut album ‘The Modern State’ on 29th January! We’ve got two reviews for this album from OriginalRock.net writers Sadie Maude and Harriet Heywood!

From Sadie Maude

This will be their first full length release on new UK based label Year Of The Rat Records and comes alongside big plans to tour in 2021.

Opening track ‘Wild & Reckless” has an awakening intro which breathes a breath of fresh air in to 2021. The subtle energy of the song grabs you without being forceful and makes for a refreshing listen. As an opener, it eases you in gently to the thrilling debut that is ‘The Modern State’, and this relaxed vibe is continued in to ‘Easy Life’.

Title track ‘The Modern State’ begins with a thumping drum beat which contrasts with the initial delicacy of the vocals. The lyrics are reflective and laced with hope, making for an empowering, feel-good message. The song is an ideal mid-point for the album, perfectly summarising all that The Young Hearts have to say so far.

This kind of uplifting sound is carried in to ‘Fool’s Gold’, a lively pop punk track with punchy vocals and an anthemic chorus. ‘Old Familiar’ builds on this but with nostalgic lyrics about people who were once close going their separate ways. Despite the tone of the lyrics, the beat is addictive and catchy, making for the kind of song that makes you want to sing at the top of your voice!

‘The Modern State’ is not the highest energy pop punk album, but it doesn’t have to be. The music is catchy, the lyrics are relatable and the songs themselves are begging to be played live. It is a great way to kick off the year and it fills you with hope for the return of live music.

From Harriet Heywood

This four-piece punk rock band are liberating our lockdown blues, sharing killer riffs and high-frequency energy in a gritty, 11-track smorgasbord of bittersweet, sing-your heart out bops.

They have shared stages with the likes of Can’t Swim, Mallory Knox, Junior and received support from Kerrang, Rock Sound, Triple J, BT TV and Alt Press…so if you still can’t imagine what’s in-store, you’re in for one hell of a culture shock!

As their first full length release on the new UK based label Year Of The Rat Records, The Young Hearts have pulled out all the stops, plugging into a catalogue of emotionally fuelled tracks to whet your appetite with.

It is packed with melodic wavers like the title track ‘The Modern State’ and crashing symphonies of electricity and drums in ‘Old Familiar’ and ‘Don’t Tell a Soul’.  Either way, there is something instantly addictive about the album that will reel you in hook, line and sinker.

Gunning through the albums emotional power, ‘Cold Nights’ and ‘Still Wonder’ are two more that had to be mentioned. In these, The Young Hearts have achieved the perfect balance between rocking guitars and rhythmic drums meaning that rather than drowning out the vocals, it takes them to a new level of power, projection and resonance.

Overall, you pop, punk-rockers are certainly in for a treat this January.
