Album Review: Deftones – OHMS

Californian alt metal band Deftones are releasing their new, highly anticipated album ‘Ohms’ on 25th September!

After maintaining their relevance and influence in the genre for a whopping 20+ years, Deftones are certainly not ones to mess with! This album demonstrates an immense level of skill and passion, one that is impressive to say the least. They may be old hands in this game but the standards are certainly not slipping!

‘Genesis’ is one heck of an opening track! The unrelenting tension in the introduction gears you up for the track ahead, creating a song that hits at both ends of the spectrum. The ferocity of some of the vocals combined with the variations in tempo makes for an unpredictable but gripping opener!

By ‘Error’ the experience of Deftones is evident. Each track is polished and executed with an effortless perfection. It is everything that you would expect from Deftones and more.

The heaviness of the album so far is eased off by the extended outro in ‘The Spell Of Mathematics’ giving the listener a little breather. ‘Pompeji’ naturally follows this with a much softer sound than what we have heard already on Ohms. The atmospheric sounds of the sea gulls add a new dimension to the track making it a more cinematic listen. It’s the little touches like these which make the album even more solid! This softness is heard again towards the end of Ohms with ‘Headless’, adding a last minute twist in to the mix – it’s a relaxing track and a welcomed break from the hustle and bustle of the earlier album!

‘The Link Is Dead’ serves to completely contrast the softness of its predecessor. It is a spooky, intense song dripping with overwhelming amounts of power. The instruments are played with an attack not heard before on the album, and when combined with the distorted, chilling vocals you can’t help but shift a bit in your seat!

For all the metal lovers and die hard Deftones fans out there, Ohms is certainly not a let down! The pure power flows from track to track and with each song you find yourself eager for more. This isn’t only a matter of experience, it is about raw talent that is few and far between!
