Give A Dog A Bone
Way back when long hair, scarves on mics and leather and lace was all the rage, even before love was given a bad name, the UK had its own Rock renegades namely, Heavy Pettin, but my friends as with many bands they were left by the wayside no longer a viable prospect in this dog eat dog industry. Fast forward to 2016 and we have a rebirth of sorts when Gary Moat, drummer now singer, formed Burnt Out Wreck. Remaining true to their original spirit of adventure and full metal attitude they now present ‘This Is Hell’ their aptly titled new album.
Under starters orders we have ‘Dead Or Alive’ an oozy, bluesy, head on down the highway number, and you get the idea. This record is brimming with sass and strut, what you’d expect really from a bona fide Rock ‘N Roll stalwart, who remains standing in the face of adversity.
We stay ‘Positive’ with the AC/DC feel of the compositions here, no nonsense, bar room boogie to kick start any party. We get a little down ‘n dirty with ‘Nick Nack Paddywack’ a zero to sixty in three seconds caper which ‘went from how are you, to fifty shades of blue’ enough to make your mum’s hair stand on end. Pull up a chair and I’ll tell you what a ‘Headfuck’ you are, a strike the match and watch it all blow scenario that I’m sure many of us can understand and relate to.
A barnstorming tribute to Rock ‘N Roll in ‘Guitars Electrified’ gives us an up-tempo, groove laden celebration of this most fabulous of instruments. With a canny ability to make you laugh, cry and lay down and die, strap on your six string or perhaps you can shake it all about with a little air guitar. Title track ‘This Is Hell’ uses the crunchy, gravelly voice to enhance the frustration we all feel and how ‘ everything around this place just drives me insane’ I’ll drink to that ladies and gents.
Heading for the finish line get ready to embrace the animal within under this full moon, HOWL! As the ‘Snow Falls Down’ on this luscious soundscape, take a moment to reflect on the endeavour and integrity of working musicians, overnight success is never just that, they negotiate many obstacles to bring you their art so you , my friends, can make your escape from this big bad world.
A solid band of good time boys styled and steeped in elec-triffic rock for whom entertainment is name of the game.
If this is hell, then hell is for heroes.
We also caught up with Gary Moat for an interview which you can check out below!
How have you and the band been keeping during lockdown? It’s been quite a horrendous situation for everyone.
We have been fine for the most part thanks. We are all busy with our families and work, doing what we can really.
For those new to your work, how would you describe yourselves?
A hi energy 5 piece twin guitar rock n roll band.
You have a wealth of experience in this industry, what are the positives and negatives that you have seen?
Well getting out and playing the music you love is what it’s all about. Getting to travel and meet people, and hopefully have a good time doing it. All to often these days band’s are just ripped off start to finish and get no money for all the work they have put into it. You have to be made of strong stuff if you are going to get through it. The age old story of rock n roll.
What is the creative process for you, lyrics, melody or subject matter, which comes first?
Guitar first mostly then melody lyrics but not always, you can wake up in the middle of the night and have the lot from a dream lol.
What was the first song you ever wrote and what was it about?
Not sure really but it will have been about a girl I’m sure, there have been so many songs.
With all the advances in technology, streaming music, downloading etc do you miss the fanfare of release day?
Well it’s still there you know, it’s scheduled to come out on a certain day at a certain time and now with the internet push a button and watch it go nuts, it’s still exciting.
Is there a subject matter that you would never write about or you would find difficult to write about?
Probably but I have changed on This Is Hell, different subjects but who knows.
What do you do for fun, any hobbies/interests that you indulge in?
I’m a married man I’m not allowed to have fun lol.I have cats and dogs,I like writing songs and love swimming,so glad to be allowed back after 4 month’s eating and drinking.
Do you think that through your music you have vanquished your demons or maybe given them a home?
Sure I’ve sent some of them packing but there’s plenty more still in me lol.
Are fans from your previous bands still with you on this journey and is it exciting for you to see new fans embrace your music?
Yes people like seeing where I’m at now, it’s great to meet up at gigs and stuff. We love to talk to as many people as we can at our live shows and hear how they have been introduced to the band, after all without the audience who are we?
What is next for you, obviously a tour would be great, but in the current situation bands have been forced to accept other routes to promote themselves?
It’s certainly been hell for everyone waiting for the green light to play live again. We have some alternative things in the pipeline coming soon. Although we can’t play I am writing songs and so another album will probably be the next thing for us, but hey we might get a gig in between then. Thanks for the support hope to see you all soon!
