Album Review: Point North – Brand New Vision

LA based band Point North released their epic new album ‘Brand New Vision’ on 21st August! After signing to Hopeless Records last year they’ve wasted no time putting together new music, and this album signifies one of the first steps on their new journey!

The album begins with title track ‘Brand New Vision (feat. DE’WAYNE)’. This is an incredibly dynamic song with a strong pop punk presence but with hip-hop/pop elements creeping in, making it a daring opener! This really sets the tone for the rest of the album and the experimentation that is yet to come! ‘Into The Dark (feat. Kellin Quinn’ follows a similar trend to its predecessor but definitely clings on to the heavier rock sound both artists are familiar with.

‘Personal’ really accentuates Lundin’s melodic vocals, and when paired with the intense violin riffs towards the chorus the whole song is tied together perfectly. It creates quite a dramatic tone to the song and adds yet another unique sound to the album.

‘A Million Pieces’ draws mainly on that classic pop punk sound with minimal embellishments. In some ways this is a bit anticlimactic after the uniqueness of the album so far, causing this track to potentially be overlooked.

The beeping sound of a heart monitor is an unusual sound to start any song with, but Point North are all about being unpredictable! Fittingly, this is how ‘Heartbeat’ begins before the crashing guitars come storming in. Despite the more harrowing lyrics about not feeling good enough, the empowering chorus is enough to lift anyone’s mood!

‘Distant’ slows down the pace of the album massively and radiates a chilled sound. The simplicity of this song is what makes it work and enables it to stand out hugely in comparison to the other songs on ‘Brand New Vision’.
Ending the album on a high is ‘Be The Same’. It is a classic, fun pop punk song that leaves you feeling great. ‘Brand New Vision’ is an insanely well-crafted album with strong pop punk roots but it’s the diversity of the songs which make it stand out from the crowd. Point North have taken a risk and its safe to say it has paid off!
