Album Review: The Vigil -Hypervigilance

Bristol based alt rock group The Vigil released their sophomore album ‘Hypervigilance’ on 21st August!

The album is a reference to putting out the best version of yourself and finding a purpose and drive in life despite the difficult and unprecedented times we are living in. Their authentic sound shines throughout the album emphasising their DIY approach to music.

Opening track ‘Out Of Plans’ is bursting with energy with its grunge-tinged rock flare. It has a slight Nirvana vibe to it and this sound makes a reappearance multiple times throughout the album. This dramatic musicality is continued in to ‘Fuel To Burn’ however the vocals are starting to slip slightly by this point.

First single ‘Above The Stone’ is a definite peak in the album so far. The strong intro sets the tone for the rest of the song with the thrashing guitar and catchy chorus giving the song that extra edge. However, despite the alternative sound and striking basslines that feature in tracks later on in the album, the overall sound continues to be quite monotonous.
The second half of the album right up until concluding track ‘Karma’s End’ has a pretty consistent, repetitive sound. This lack of variety puts a slight downer on the album but creates a more intense rock album. The punchy music is in your face and emphasises the hard rock sound that The Vigil strive for.
