Interview: Plastic Barricades

So how has your latest release gone so far with fans then?

We’ve just released “Tunnel”, our 3rd single from the upcoming sophomore LP “Self-Theories”. Although written and recorded last year, this song suddenly got an extra layer of meaning in 2020. We are humbled by the response it has been getting from around the world and also very grateful to all the support we get from media outlets. Building personal relationships with journalists and bloggers and radio presenters feels very rewarding and it is nice to be talking to music lovers from all around.

Tell us something about the release no one knows?

In terms of production it is all truly DIY: written and recorded in a backyard shed studio using minimal equipment and minimal amount of takes. We just wanted the song to sound as real as possible and have a “band next door” feel to it. Not many people know that the music video was all done with a digital microscope, but I am sure no one knows that if you look hard enough you might spot a little white van in one of the frames. That’s the same exact van that we drowned in our previous music video for “Optimist”. Go have a look!

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

I would give a lot to be able to write a song with Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters, Simon Neil and Biffy Clyro and Ben Gibbard and Death Cab for Cutie. Why? Because these guys are the real deal, they don’t play rockstars, they just write the most heartfelt and sincere songs and don’t pretend they have all the answers. I love these guys deeply and someday we will all have a blast jamming together.

Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?

“Tunnel” is a song about suddenly finding yourself alone with your fears and anxieties.

Sometimes it feels like life is this winding road with plenty of tunnels. You go in, it is dark and uneasy, and pretty soon you start wondering how long is this tunnel. Visibility is reduced, you cannot really increase your speed or turn back. It starts to feel claustrophobic. Your thoughts are amplified, reverberating in your head. All you can do is keep reminding yourself that no tunnel lasts forever and you will make it out of this one, like all the previous ones you’ve been to – and you will see sunlight again!

What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?

Tours and 2020 don’t seem to go together too well. We want to be absolutely sure we don’t put our fans at risk before we book any shows. Hoping to get back on stage in autumn, but we’ll have to see how the next month goes.

What venue are you most looking forward to playing the most, and why?

There is a lot of beautiful and iconic venues around the world that are on our bucket list, but in the end it is all about the crowd. We’ve playing stunning shows in tiny smelly underground holes and boring ones in purpose built great sounding ones. So you never know. Touring the world sounds like a fun activity in any case.

What else can we expect from in 2020?

Our second full length album “Self-Theories” will most definitely be out by the end of autumn. We are quite proud of this release, because we’ve done it all ourselves, just two of us – me and Paul – and it is as honest as a record can possibly be. We are not pretending to be someone we are not, instead we are embracing all those idiosyncrasies that make humans human. I think we all need to be more sincere with each other, that will most certainly solve a lot of problems.
