Live Review: Legends Live 2019 – Suzi Quatro, David Essex, Les McKewans Bay City Rollers & Smokie at Bournemouth’s BIC

SMOKIE kick off the final night of the Legends Live tour 2019 with a short but impressive set which unsurprisingly ends with the sing-a-long favourite ‘Living Next Door To Alice’, and yes the crowd and band partake in “Alice, Alice who the f**k is Alice.” Les McKewan has been doing the seaside end of pier tours for forever and a day. He knows what the crowd want and he gives them their rose-tinted teenage memories back with a Rollers greatest hits run through. ‘Summer Sensation’, ‘I Only Wanna Be With You’, ‘Give A Little Love’ and a foot-stomping ‘Shang A Lang’ all give way to the scarf waving set closer ‘Bye Bye Baby’. DAVID ESSEX still has that, housewives favourite glint in his eye and a smile that could melt concrete. ‘Beautiful Day’, ‘Silver Dream Machine’ and the timeless ‘I’m Gonna Make You a Star’ all prick the “Christ I know this one”, memory bank, Decked out in waistcoat, jeans & boots he looks every inch the arena performer and with tracks like the eye-moistening ‘It’s Going To Be Alright’ his star shows no sign of falling. VIVE LE ROCK award winner SUZI QUATRO gives the night some good old fashioned leather clad seventies wallop. ‘The Wild One’, ’Mama’s Boy’ and a motoring ‘She’s In Love With You’ get bums off seats and (replacement) hips swaying. New track ‘No Soul/No Control’ is overtaken by ‘48 Crash’ and a booming cover of ‘Keep On Rockin’ In The Free World’. The show-stealing duo of ‘Can The Can’ and ‘Devil Gate Drive’ complete a night of high entertainment seventies kissed Rock ‘N’ Roll. Fuck the kettle and Countryfile, can you find a better way to spend Sunday night than this? “I don’t think so!”
