Hailing from Bristol, EYES combines rock/pop sensibilities with an honest and raw approach to instrumentation and lyrics. After ever extensive gigging, yet restless, due to an ever changing lineup in previous band, Thelema, EYES formed in late 2017 from its remnants. With a bunch of songs ready, yet not knowing what to do with them, they decided to jump the EP route, and dive in and record an album. Recorded at Malthouse Studios (notable alumni; IDLES, Spectres, Lice) during 2018, their debut album, ‘Closure’ was released 28th June 2019.An album centred on love and addiction, and it’s many facets.‘After a lot of time fucking around, this seems like finally, it’s our arrival’. Check out album Closure below!
We caught up with EYES as they talked about their latest album and more!
So how has the release of your album Closure gone down so far?
It’s been received well. It’s all about exposure in this industry. All you can do is create something you truly believe in, so as and when your audience hear it, you hope to hold their attention.
What’s your favourite song on this album?
It constantly changes. I suppose the song that always brings me back into its space, is Black Dog. Its about my struggles with addiction….where there’s always that one more time, always a tomorrow to start a fresh. It’s the most personal song on the album.
Can you tell us something about the album no one else know?
Griff (our guitarist), his daughter’s antique jewellery music box appears on the song Medicine. She allowed me to borrow it ha! Thanks Isla!
What was your favourite moment making the album?
Probably finishing it ha! At least for the other guys they’d probably say that! I procrastinate over everything.
If you could work with a band on a new single. who would it be and why?
It would be with EYES. No doubt. We’re improving all the time, which is what’s expected with anything you put a lot of time and effort into. Coincidentally we’re going back into the studio later in the year to record a couple of new tracks we’re really excited about. There’s clear progression in what we’re doing.
What do you all get up to in your spare time?
Usual stuff…..Lachrymology (which is where the band name originated from), Scrabble, Crochet, Horology, casual late night dogging.
So what’s the alternative scene like in Bristol at the moment?
Bristol is steeped in history of alternative music, its a beautiful multi cultured city, and its music has always represented that. And it’s thriving again, which is good for all.
The band are:Aaron O’Sullivan (Vocals/Guitar)Ricky Griffiths (Guitar/BV)Jimmy Powell (Bass/BV)Tim Rugman (Drums/BV)
