Interview: Sad Funeral talks upcoming single

SAD FUNERAL is the solo recordings of Adam Kane Cave Painting and producer, Rob Flynn Oslo Parks.
The debut single will be released (digitally) on the 7th of June 2019.

The song Gone was written after a long break from music, having previously been in a band signed to Mercury/Sony ATV and being left feeling a bit disillusioned with it all I probably didn’t touch music for about 2/3 years. So this song is pretty important to me as it was one of the first songs I wrote without a band and after such a lengthy break. It was liberating to just sit and make music again without any expectations and to just have fun again, something that can definitely lost when you get caught up in the business side of the music industry. The song is about the time honoured subject of a relationship turning sour and escapism to better that relationship. The song was recorded over a couple of days at Bluebell hill studios with Barny Barnicot (Bombay Bicycle club/Cloud Control) with extra production from Robert Flynn (Oslo Parks)

We caught up with Sad Funeral as he talked about is upcoming single and more!

So how pumped are you for the release of Gone?

Well the project is really in its infancy at this point and as I’m self releasing this as a new project, I’m also having to self promote so it’s hard to gauge but hopefully the people who are aware are enjoying what I’m trying to do

Can you tell something about the single no one else knows?

The single was written around 2 years ago after a massive break from music, so there’s quite a lot of emotive stuff going on for me around this track, and it’s also a symbol of recovery from a pretty rough time after going through the whole signed musician routine a couple of times

How would you compare to performing this going to performing a song within a band such as Cave Painting?

It’s a tricky question because I haven’t done any live work yet, but I’m excited as it’s an opportunity to work and play with new musicians, old friends and even musicians from previous work

Will you be releasing an EP/album after this?

The plan right now is to keep writing and carve out as much time as possible around working to do that, my friend Rob Flynn (Oslo parks) is helping me work towards an EP possibly mini album, at this point I just want to create music and have people hear it again, I’ve missed that cathartic experience

If you could work with another artist or band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Good question, I’ve always been a big fan of Matt Berninger which is no secret, but lately most of the music I’ve been listening to is female led, there’s a different quality to the vocals, so I’d probably go with Victoria Legrand from Beach House or Jenn Wasner from Wye Oak

What’s the music scene like in Brighton at the moment?

The Music scene in Brighton always seems to be healthy, I’ve been away from it for such a long time now but I have close friends such as County Line Runner who are doing good things at the moment.

Will you be touring at all this year?

Always thinking about playing live, it will be an exciting experience to get the tracks into shape for performing, I’ll probably look at live dates later in the year

What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?

Well lately for some reason I’ve been doing a lot of triathlons! Think my mid life crisis must have come early, in all honesty I think the hole left by performing and writing has been filled with exercise, which has actually been great, mentally exercise seems to help, and it’s inadvertently brought my focus back to music and the whole creative process so I’m thankful for that
