Album Review: Weatherstate – Born A Cynic

Coming out of Bristol, via California it would seem, are the sunny upbeat stylings of pop punkers Weatherstate, with their blistering debut album “Born A Cynic.” Harking back to a time, about 20 years ago to be exact, the 4 piece sound like they came out of the late 90’s punk scene with the likes of New Found Glory and Blink 182.

Opener “Ghost” is the perfect accompaniment to those beach fires in the evening after a day of surfing in some part of the world that isn’t Bristol. The band rarely deviate from this formula, but if it ‘aint broke, don’t fix it and the band are happy to blast their way through 11 tracks of pulsating punk rock. Highlights include the first song they wrote for the album “Brain Dead” and “Sympathy” a track that reminds me of when Green Day were good.”Medicate” is a spiky little number which will have the masses pogoing around the mosh pits this summer. The subject of summer love is always a popular subject with these types of bands and Weatherstate aren’t above writing about it either, with the anthemic “Emma-Lynn” The band finish off a great little album with singer/guitarist Harry Hoskins giving it some Billie Joe in the attitude packed “Cynic.”The foursome have an attitude, maturity of songwriting and talent that defies there years and that should carry them far.  A worldwide release in May means that Weatherstate have already added themselves to my soundtrack for summer 2019 and “Born A Cynic” really should be part of yours too.
