The Wolf Howls When I Scream Your Name originated as a solo project by singer and guitarist Matty Awbery, originally setting out to sad emotive songs similar to the likes of Julien Baker & The National, it became apparent the material Awbery was writing was different and demanded a band.
Set to be released on April 22nd ‘To Be Where There Is Pale Light’ is an Alternative Rock record that spans influences from the likes of Thrice to Radiohead even to City & Colour. Consistently dealing with the topic of death ‘To Be Where There Is Pale Light’ spans the feeling of wishing for the end, confusion and loss.  The band consists of Matty Awbery, Sam Johnson and Harry Woodrow.

For now check out No Alibi below!

We managed to catch up with Matty Awbery as talked about the upcoming release and more!

So how pumped are you for you upcoming album ‘To Be Where There Is Pale Light’? Can you tell something about the release no one else knows?

I’m really excited, we all are. This is the first proper release i’ve done since my last band broke up last august, i went through months of feeling very lost and kind of gave up on the whole idea of pursuing a band, in my last band we tried really hard with four different PR companies and got severely let down until the last one we worked with, dragging a release campaign out for a year really fucked us and internally I don’t think we were getting along either. So after spending a few months just focussing on my relationship and working i got to the point where i felt i needed to properly have a go of it with this band, so this is the first thing we’ve done where it hasn’t been treated like a side project, and it will remain that way.

It’s a coherent dark record that takes many shifts, i’m mainly excited about it because i think i’ve done a few nods to Radiohead on this record, and that band got me into music, i just never deemed that possible but i really got on a roll with this one. We’ll be releasing some pretty graphic videos alongside what i’m about so i guess that’s something nobody knows!

What’s your favourite song on this album?

A song called ‘It Hurts Me’ which is a really cinematic track, we experimented loads in the studio with it, used some synths which turned out really cool and put some really really heavy droning guitars in it, it really came to life in the studio that song did, we’ve covered new ground with that one.

So how has the release of No Alibi gone down with fans so far?

It’s gone well so far yeah, i think our first single ‘Alive & All So Well’ really struck a chord, No Alibi is like a nice contrast of the rockier side of the record and the darker, more ethereal side.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Failure, definitely, there record Fantastic Planet is my favourite album ever, they are nothing alike us but i take certain qualities of what they do and incorporate it into our sound.

Will you be touring at all this year?

Yeah we will be, we’re doing a two date run with our friends in Clay Lake as we’re both releasing our e.ps in April, but we will be doing some longer length runs over the year and we hope to step up the ladder as much as possible and make a success of the band.

What do you all get up to in your spare time when not working on music?

Sam runs a mobile disco business and is always going to shows, Harry is in about 500 bands so he’s always busy, i’m either working, spending time with my girlfriend and my family or exercising

What’s the alternative scene like in Cheshire at the moment?

That’s a hard one to answer, a couple of more indie leaning bands are doing pretty good for themselves. I think out of all my friends bands it’s more the Hardcore scene that i’m pretty excited about, and i don’t consume that music very often, but my mates in Black Coast are absolutely killing it, they’re touring a lot and expanding their sound, i can see them going places, Moralslips recent record is mind blowing how heavy it is. I don’t think a lot of bands tour a lot around the area, but there’s really creative stuff coming about. I’m really hoping Clay Lake take their new record on tour because they could be a world touring band they are that good.
