Interview: Creature talk upcoming single ‘I Like You’

Fuzzed up grunge rock Newcastle trio, Creature, are set to release their new single I Like You on 2nd March.

The band will be celebrating the release by playing the Little Buildings in Newcastle, supporting iDestroy as part of their UK Tour.

The trio consists of:

Sam Avery – Vocals/Guitar
David Scott – Bass
Jamie Oliver – Drums

We managed to catch up with the band as they talked about the upcoming single and more!

So how pumped are you for the release of I Like You?

I Like You is our first release of 2019 so we’re very excited to properly start off our year. We recorded this back in December so it’s been difficult to keep to ourselves, but we wanted to go all the way with this track and spent some extra time working on a video and promotion.

We had the wonderful Jay Dawson of Shutter Productions shoot the video for us and we’re all really happy with how it’s come out. Jay has been so good to work with and had a load of great ideas for the video.

Can you tell us something about the single no one else knows?

The end section of the song, where everything kicks up a notch was a spur of the moment decision in the studio. We hadn’t played the song like that previously but thought it sounded good so we put it in. It really makes the song for me now. We also recorded this on the same day as our previous single ‘Grow’ we did both tracks in an 8 hour session.

Will you be releasing an EP/Album this year?

We’re releasing an EP later on this year which will consist of a couple of our singles along with some new tracks. I’d absolutely love to do an album but at the moment it feels right to keep doing regular singles to keep the momentum going. We have enough new material for an album but it’s probably not going to happen any time soon.

If you could (collaborate) with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

There’s a ton of bands we love at the moment but I’d quite like to hear a Creature song with some electronic elements or something a bit different. Crammond says ‘Phantogram’ who sound pretty sick.

How pumped are you for your show with I Destroy in Newcasle? ]

We cant wait! It’s been a while since we last played with iDestroy so we’re really looking forward to catching up with them again. They’ve released some wicked tracks since we last saw them so it’ll be good to see them played live. Sing Again Syren are also on the bill, watch out for them! They’ve been hitting the scene seriously hard recently and we’re completely in love with them. I’m personally looking forward to seeing 14 Reasons who I’ve not seen live yet but their demos sound very good.

Will you be touring at all in 2019?

Hopefully! We have a few little trips planned but nothing more than a few dates yet. We’ve had some offers to support bands on tours but unfortunately couldn’t make it work financially, which sucks, but we can’t risk being out of pocket. We’re working on it though and should be travelling more later this year.

What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?

Music is the main focus for all of us so we do very little outside of it! We have our side projects going which really help to take the stress off a little and keep us busy. I’m (Sam) in another band called Melt who’ve been working on an EP and Crammond is starting a Punk band which sounds like a lot of fun. Jamie lives for DnB so he’s probably at a rave somewhere.
