Interview: Rain In July

There’s something transcendent about the feeling of a rainstorm in the middle of the Summer. Amidst the hottest days there is a spell in which everything is different, yet more sane than ever. Boulder’s Rain In July is representing that spirit of difference in a similar vein. The debut EP Trying to Breathe deals with a lyrical journey through the roughest year of a lifetime, and coming out on the other side with a stoic sense of self. Taking elements from modern alternative rock, emo, and the leanings of traditional pop punk, the record can only be described as a Rain In July EP. Coming off 2017’s EP release, the band will be looking to showcase their developed sound in the alternative scene with the new single/music video combo of Beachside, releasing in July of 2018. We managed to catch up with the band as they talked about their latest release and more!

So how has your latest album/EP gone so far with fans then?

We believe that our latest EP which came out over a year ago now, has gone so far because it is something that a lot of people aren’t doing in our scene. Sure we can be put into a genre but whichever genre you put us into we still are doing something different than what other bands in that genre are doing.

Tell us something about the release no one knows?

We’ve performed different versions of this song live many many times. But since the first time we played it, it has gone through the editing mill and had a title change and just about everything in the song changed but it’ll be cool for people who have seen us live because they might recognize it.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Working with A Day to Remember would be one of the coolest things to experience for us. Jeremy McKinnon is a great song writer and producer so having his input would be amazing, along with just how that band puts their parts together it would be a dream to get those kind of ears on our own stuff.

How has your latest single been received?

Knockout is currently our latest single and it’s our most popular song. It’s the song everyone knows when they come to our shows which also makes it the most fun to play for us. The fact that people listened to our song enough times to memorize the lyrics is mind blowing and really flattering to be honest. But we also have a new single coming very soon so hopefully we can create more waves with that.

Can you tell us about the meaning behind the track?

The meaning behind knockout isn’t too complicated. It roots from falling for a girl but as the lyrics explain, falling for too many people can kind of change the way we go about things or the way we act towards those people.

What tours do you have coming up, and what can you tell us about them?

Unfortunately we don’t have any road time lined up right now. We’ve been pretty unlucky in the past year that both times we planned to head out on the road, things happened that were out of our control and eventually prevented us from touring but we’re itching to go new places and meet new faces so hopefully we can line something up very soon.

What venue are you most looking forward to playing the most, and why?

All of us being from Colorado, we’ve all dreamed about playing a hometown show at Red Rocks. That takes a lot because you have to have the numbers for it, and the performance for it, but our dreams can be our goals too so who knows maybe one day people will see our faces on a red rocks poster and will want to be there.

What else can we expect from in 2018?

Even though some things fell through for us this summer, we all still believe 2018 can be a very pivotal year for us. It’s been too long since we released some new music so that’ll be for sure taken care of and if you follow our social media accounts you’ll see many pictures of us bearing down and writing a lot of new material so that’s something to stay excited for within the year.
