Interview: Romances talk latest release

Romances are an alt rock band indicative of what makes their hometown of London beautiful – International multiculturalism, freedom, expression, creation and rock and roll. Parallels is their first studio single and was released on June 1st along with an incredible, cinematic music video to coincide with their debut festival performance at the Isle Of Wight Festival Check out Parallels below!

We managed to catch up with the ban as they talked about their latest release and more!

So how has the initial response been for Parallels?

It’s been crazy! We’ve had a great response from all our fans and more and more people are hearing about the band. It’s our first ‘proper’ studio single as the others have all been live releases so it’s been exciting to hear people’s reaction. We even got a shout out from Billy Ray Cyruswhich was a bit mental.

Can you tell us something about the single no one else knows?

Ok so here’s the thing… I haven’t told anyone this but the lyrics came about from listening to an episode of Radio 4’s “The Infinite Monkey Cage”. Which is a science show with Professor Brian Cox and Robin Ince! I was really struck by the way they physicists explained the nature of infinity and parallel universes. So I tried to combine that theory with the idea of bumping into an old lover. I’ve just publicly outed my inner geek.

Will you be releasing an EP/Album this year?

Currently we’re scheduling the release of our next single, we’ve got no plans in the very near future to release a full record. But we’ll definitely have something in the works for 2019.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

We’ve all got such different influences. But we’d love to work with Iggy Pop & Josh Homme. Their album Post Pop Depression was incredible. I’ve met Iggy once and would love to work with him he’s a true legend.

How pumped are you for Isle of Wight Festival next month?

We’re pumped. We’ve all individually played huge stages before with other bands but this is our baby. We’ll be in our element up there, this band was MADE for festivals and they don’t come much better that the Isle Of Wight.

You also have a few venue gigs too, do you find these different to festivals?

We just love playing shows. At bigger gigs and festivals everything is amplified a little bit in terms of performance. The smaller gigs are just as fun in a different way, we play like we’re about to burst out of the room and you can stare into the whites of people’s eyes – they’re more intense.

What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?

Me and Ashby in particular love our football… we have a group of musician friends who all get together and play once or twice a week. Randomly we play with a few other people playing the festival including James Bay and Alex Francis – top lads!

What was the first ever gig you went to?

According to my mum, my parents went to a Paul McCartney concert at Earl’s Court when I was still in the womb. I probably didn’t know too much what was going on at that point, but combined with the fact my Dad played the Beatles’ music non-stop when I was a kid probably explains my incredible love of The Beatles.
