Having already toured with The Hold Steady, received airplay on BBC Radio 1 and played out on Soccer AM, singer-songwriter Mortimer Jackson returns with indie rock single Chancers & Rats, dropping June 22nd. After being a finalist at a BASCA supported songwriting competition, Mortimer Jackson returns with infectious vocals and melodies.
Taking influence from the classics such as Blur, Oasis and Joy Divison, yet keeping it modern with sounds similar to Miles Kane, DMA’S and The Vaccines, Jackson’s sound appeals to the masses. Showcasing his distinctive vocals, ‘Chancers & Rats’ follows two people from completely different walks of life who come together to beat the system.
Produced and recorded at Audiobeach Studios in Brighton, mixed at Buffalo Studios in London and mastered by Grammy award winning Robert Harder in California, Chancers & Rats is released June 22nd. For now check out You’re Not The Freaks below!
We managed to catch up with the artist as he talked about this upcoming release and more!
So how pumped are you for the release of Chancers & Rats?
I’m very excited to release this single – I wrote it a long time ago but it was never the right time to release it, it’s also been completely re-vamped so can’t wait to get it out there!
Can you tell us something about the release no one else knows?
It was originally written in the style of New Order’s ‘True Faith’ and played much much slower! It went from being a synth-led indie-dance track to a guitar driven indie-rock track, maybe I’ll release the original version as a b-side one day!
Will you be releasing an EP/Album this year?
It’s definitely on the cards for this year, I will be releasing a series of singles first though!
If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
I would love to work with Miles Kane, he’s a brilliant collaborator and I love his new song ‘Loaded’ – it sounds like a modern day version of John Lennon!
What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?
Most of my time is taken up with music but I love traditional pubs, intimate gigs and occasional boxset binges!
Are you planning on a tour at all this year to coincide with the release?
Theres no tour in the pipeline but I’m open to any offers!
What was the first ever gig you went to?
Oasis in Exeter, my twin brother caught Noel’s plectrum!
What’s it like being supported by BBC Radio 1 and Soccer AM?
It was amazing hearing my band on Radio 1 for the first time, we were driving back from a gig and it came on in the car, it was completely unexpected! Soccer AM was really cool too, I missed it live but got loads of phone calls from my mates!
