Laughed the Boy began as an outlet for honest and unpretentious 90’s nostalgia inspired songs. After splitting time between writing songs intended for video games and his own solo material, he decided to combine the two into one project when he went into the studio with his brother Sean to record their EP Out of the Blue. The band’s catchy melodies and fuzzy guitar playing drew comparisons to artists such as Weezer, Sloan, and Pavement. The two brothers added bass player Brennan Hrehoruk to the lineup and began playing the songs live. While rehearsing for shows, the trio ended up with an album’s worth of fresh material and headed into the studio once again to record their debut full length LP Here is Fine released last February. They’re currently recording their sophomore release and keeping momentum going with Halfway. Check out his latest single below!
We managed to catch up with Laughed the Boy as they talked about his latest song and more!
How has the release of Halfway gone down with fans?
Pretty well, it’s been put on a bunch of summer playlists so I’m glad people like it enough to be the soundtrack for whatever their summertime activities are!
Can you tell something about the single no one else knows?
It was recorded in our dad’s basement. It came together so quickly that we just kept rolling with it until it was eventually done.
Will you be releasing another album or EP this year?
We’ll be doing at least another single or EP. We’re planning on recording an album but we don’t want to rush it. It should be out either the end of this year or the start of 2019. I’ll be playing a lot more piano on it than usual so I need some practice time!
If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
Tera Melos seem fun to work with, there’s no limit to what kind of weird noises you can make with them. Could definitely work on some wacky, loud but melodic songs.
What’s it like going into the studio with your brother, do you get on well?
Yea it’s easy because no matter how things go you’re stuck with each other haha. It’s makes tossing ideas around easy because we can be brutally honest and not really offend each other. Our thought process is similar so if we go down a rabbit hole with an idea we know we’re usually trying to get to the same place.
What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?
In the summer I like to be outside with my friends, whether at a park, beach or on a hike of some sort. I also like travelling so I’ll often be planning a new trip on the side. When it’s too cold outside, I’ll usually be playing an older video game or a watching a movie that someone recommended to me years ago that I never got around to.
Any tours or festivals lined up this year?
As of now I’m pretty focused on our new material, so other than playing around Ontario we won’t be doing anything too crazy this year in terms of touring.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
My first concert I ever went to was Foo Fighters and Bob Dylan. The Foo Fighters played acoustic with a big backing band so it was pretty cool, Bob Dylan was..fairly old, but hey it’s still Bob Dylan, right?
