Century Thirteen‘s own blend of Alternative Rock fueled with Punk Pop takes from a range of sources but predominately pulls from Blink-182, New Found Glory, and Green Day. The Glaswegian punks set loose their new self-titled album on Friday 13th July, through all platforms.
Since their formation in 2014, the Scottish tunesters have worked exceptionally hard on their craft. Aided by a strong DIY work ethic, the quartet have already released four well-received EPs, and have built a steady fanbase throughout Scotland which has been encouraged by a series of high octane and energetic live performances. The industrious quartet have also shared stages with everyone from Fenix TX, The Bottom Line, Better Days, Speaking in Shadows, Chasing Cadence, Altered Sky, Your Illuminations, Homebound andSix Time Champion, to Lightyear. Century Thirteen possess a passionate community spirit and regularly play numerous charity events and shows for such causes as cancer research, metal health awareness, and autism.
The punk rockers have just completed work on their new self-titled album, which arrives this July. The record is stuffed from back to front with bangers. From their forthcoming single, A Million Times, to the newly released, Not My Place, the album is the band’s best work to date. Check out Not My Place below!
We caught up with the band as they talk about their upcoming album and more!
So how pumped are you for the release of your self-titled album?
Kevin: Very pumped about this being our first album, it’s been such a roller coaster ride. We have wanted to release an album for a long time and this has been 2 years in the making so we are glad it’s finally coming out.
Dale: Super pumped, we can’t wait for everyone to hear these songs recorded! Also we’ve really taken the time to make sure these songs are as good as they can be.
What is your track from the release?
Kevin: We have had a few, the first song on the album Get off was released as a single last year with a video to go along with it, and most recently we have released Not My Place to promote the album.
Scott: I like all the tracks on the album, but A Million Times is probably one of my favourites, but really I can’t wait for everyone to get to hear the whole album.
Can you tell something about the album no one else knows?
Kevin: The tracks Ours and The Last were written years ago when me and Scott played in an old band together, but they were never recorded until this point, so there like a flash from the past.
Scott: Yeah, it’s been fun being able to work on those tracks again alongside all the new ones! Although they had never been recorded or played live before so they’re still new to everyone else!
So this is self released, would you rather have a record label or are you enjoying life at the moment?
Kevin: At this point we are enjoying the moment, its a very proud moment but we are open to having talks with different labels about the future.
Dale: To be able to have the opportunity to release our album is awesome and we are having so much fun in the build up to its release.
Scott: It’s been good to have the freedom to work on the album and release it ourselves. I’d say we’re enjoying where we are at the moment, I don’t think we’d be against working with a record label but it would have to be the right deal for us. Who knows what will happen in the future though!
If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
Kevin: I would really like to work with Billie Joe Armstrong, having him do guest vocals for a track would sound incredible. It would be a dream come true for me, the guy’s one of my idols.
Dale: That’s a hard one for me but I’d have to say Matty Lewis from Zebrahead! I always love the vocal dynamics between him and Ali! Him guest starring his vocals on one of our tracks would be totally something to look back on!
Scott: I’d love to work with Anamanaguchi, it would sound awesome to mix their retro electronic and chiptune sounds into one of our tracks, and they’ve got such an awesome ability to write really great melodies!
So will you be touring to coincide the release of the album?
Kevin: We will be playing a few different gigs in our hometown of Glasgow, maybe a weekender with a few Scottish dates and hopefully some festivals. Touring wise we will hopefully be looking at something for next year but it would be good to get to play some shows down south.
What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?
Kevin: Lots of crazy stuff – last weekend myself and Dale went to Teddy Rocks and partied all weekend, drank beers in yellow fields, met a horse, spoke to and watched so many bands, got sunburnt, got lost, and just had the most amazing time. So spare time wise we all love music, whether its playing it or watching it, drinking beer is always fun too! And for me I enjoy getting lost places and exploring them. We have pictures on instagram of this horse btw!
Dale: Hang out, if it be for drinks or going to gigs and having a laugh! Teddy Rocks as stated by Kevin was so much fun!
Scott: I like to go to gigs when I can too, I go to a lot of local shows in Glasgow when I can, also I’m a big gamer so I like to do some gaming to relax as well. Also I like to read a lot so I’m usually in the middle of some books or comics. And I like to do some art when I get the time as well.
What was the first gig you went to?
Kevin: Less Than Jake in Barrowlands, when I was 16. When I was 15 I almost went to see Sum 41 but I got ill and didn’t get to go, I still have the ticket as a reminder of the one who got away.
Dale: My first gig was Good Charlotte at the Academy in Glasgow with support from Millencolin and the Explosion, when I was 16.
Scott: The first for me was Muse at the SECC when I was around 16 or 17, and Elbow were supporting, that was an amazing first gig. Muse really know how to put on a show!
