Album Review: The Nectars – Sci-Fi Television

New Jersey four-piece The Nectars release their debut album the eclectic, rocking and highly addictive ‘Sci-Fi Television’. Opener ‘Holy’ kicks trash can senses with it’s short, sharp and wonderfully snotty sound. ‘Heaven’ is a Pop Punk anthem without the sugar-coated production that flips so many other wannabe bands onto their stomachs while sticking their butts in the air. The independent sound bristles in the background while the female vocals are perfectly paired with the underground pounding beat. ‘Cemetery Girl’ marries Blondie and The Ramones in a Beetlejuice graveyard, it’s simple but devastatingly effective 70’s CBGB Rock. It’s easy to see why the commercial ‘We Will Run’ is the lead single. The slow rising track does suffer from way too many “woo hoo’s” as it nestles somewhere between daytime teen-friendly radio and watered down Grunge. ‘I Want it’ bangs with Transvision Vamp seductive, dirty and delicious “I don’t want your money honey” vocals. ‘Don’t Panic’ nursery rhymes along before twisting little bo peep’s neck till her face turns blue and then dumps her body in a lake of chopping guitars. Next up is ‘Lights Off’ which shuffles to a Nile Rodgers riff before an uplifting ‘Tame’ heads back into Manson’s Garbage town. Final track ‘Tired’ has some laconic, wiping the sleep from my eyes dual vocals and a Blurry British musical backbone. The Nectars have served up a superlatively fresh debut and this is definitely a band to keep your eyes and ears open for.
