SONS recently releases their latest track Marco (What’s going on). A friend of the band called Graham Cullis came up with the idea as he wanted to make a anti-gun/mental health video and thought Marko was a perfect fit for his idea. The band are not planning to release it as a single yet.
Brothers Lee and Nick Meldrum exploded onto the garage punk scene in January 2016 and it has been an upward trajectory since. It has been a whirlwind year for the Brighton two-piece, who have recently signed to emerging DIY punk label Till Deaf Do Us Party Records (Frauds/ Night Owls).
Darlings of incendiary and bastions of rock ‘n’ roll club night This Feeling, all four singles have been heavily rotated by indie/rock radio luminaries Huw Stephens, John Kennedy, Alex Baker and Steve Lamacq. The band have also grabbed the attention of the likes of Clash Music, Kerrang!, Team Rock, GigSlutz and The Zine. The duo also have two live radio sessions under their belt, for Radio X and BBC Introducing The South.
Meanwhile, the band have taken their riotous live set on the road, gigging up and down the country with highlight sets at The Great Escape, Camden Rocks and most recently Reading Festival 2017, with many more gigs on the horizon.
If you like it loud with a lot of bite and you like explosive vocal melodies with buzzsaw riffs that could wake the dead, you’ll love SONS. Check out Marco (What’s going on) below!
We managed to catch up with SONS as they talked about their latest track and more!
How pumped are you for the release of Marco (What’s Going On?)
It’s a funny one, it’s not actually got a proper release day at the moment. It’s a song we demoed a while back that caught the imagination of our friend and director Graham Cullis.
Can you tell us something about the release no one else knows?
There isn’t a lot to tell at the moment, just that with the love we’ve been getting for the video we are definitely trying to get it out on all platforms now.
Have you got an idea of when this track will be released?
Hopefully very soon. As it’s started getting a bit of love on radio it would be ideal to get it out there the sooner the better.
How much does anti gun/mental health mean to you guys?
Mental health has always been a subject close to the heart for Nick and myself. Having spent my life battling demons and our mum having lost her fight against hers it is a subject that I feel needs more airing to beat away the stigma that is still attached to it. As for guns, I don’t understand a society that can fear gun crime yet still put them out on the streets. There is no justification in my mind to be able to legally acquire a weapon created for warfare just to protect yourself. In the song itself I’m trying to cover how when those weapons get into the hands of someone with mental illnesses it is just asking for trouble and society ends up paying the price through the atrocities we keep seeing in the news.
If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
I think I can speak for both of us that if it was any band ever it would be Nirvana. That band, their music and Kurts lyrics changed us both as children and inspired us to pick up our instruments in the first place.
Have you got any tours dates or festivals lined up for this year?
We have a few things coming up over the year. Lots of gigs, a few festivals and a European tour in the working for winter. Keep your eyes peeled to our Facebook for all updates and news… https://www.facebook.com/sonsbanduk/
What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?
I’m a movie fanatic! Pretty much if I’m not working or on my guitar you can find me in front of some kind of screen haha.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
It was a band called Nada Surf. They were great. It was our first time in London and they were playing The Underworld. we were in our very early teens at the time and unbeknownst to us it was an over 18 gig. Long story short, the band saw us outside, heard what had happened and got us in with AAA passes and their manager as chaperon. We were made up!
