Album Review: Lordi – Sexorcism

Lordi’s ninth studio album is a head shaking, did he really sing that… type of release. Opener ‘Sexorcism’ pushes the boundaries of decency and or humour with such lines as “I slip my fingers inside her” and “Sir I hate to say this, but your daughter needs a sexorcism”. They are the musical equivalent King Diamond fisting Spinal Tap while Michael Starr records the tawdry act on a stolen i-phone. The music is atmospheric Rock at its most grandeur married with Bad News lyrics, this is none more evident than on the bands latest single ‘Your Tongue’s Got Your Cat’. A crunching riff opens the disgustingly titled ‘Romeo Ate Juliet’ while ‘Naked In My Cellar’ intro is a female panting with fear or excitement, Eurovision fare it ain’t. The crossover of 80’s Heavy Rock and Broadway show tunes with Steel Panther wordology is both amusing and slightly worrying. It’s like re-watching a seventies sitcom like Mind Your Language or Love Thy Neighbour, they are both humorous, but not in a laugh out loud kind of way, more a what the f**k…you can’t say that in 2018. The lyrics write themselves on titles such as ‘The Beast Is Yet To Cum’… ‘Polterchrist’ is as far as I can voyage on this particular ship. Lordi has taken Rock music back to the dark days, which is a miss as the music is both uplifting and catchy, however, its devil meets virgin content are woefully out of date. Dungeon & Dragons Heavy Metal meets National Lampoon…Speechless.
