Charly is a French singer, musician and composer based in Los Angeles, California, USA.
Always aware that she wanted to be an active creator in the musical realm, she started to sing and play guitar during her childhood.
After high school, she diverged from her path as a dentist and gravitated to the Arts. She earned a Bachelor degree in Art and Communication at the ICART in Paris, France and dove right into the music industry, working at record labels, concerts venues and festivals organizations.
She quickly realised she needed more and didn’t just want help other artists to develop their projects. She wanted to develop her own.
Since she always sang in English, she decided to take her chance in LA where she has been established for the last five years.
Just graduated from the Musicians Insitute, Hollywood, her hyperactivity in the music field never stopped. She created a band called ‘Charly&Faust’ in which she plays guitar, sings and manages everything with her partner Faust. She is also part of another band called ‘The Sutra’ with who she plays bass and does backing vocals. Now Charly has released her EP Awareness below!
We managed to catch up with Charly as she talked about her latest EP and more!
So how has the release of your Awareness EP gone down so far?
Pretty good. Thank you for asking. I am actually surprise that people that are not family and friends bought it *laugh*
Can you tell us something about the EP no one else knows?
There is something I say on the bridge of “Leave it” that nobody noticed yet except one of my friend, Ryan Bean (“Betwenntworivers”), who helped me correct lyrics.
What is your favorite track from the EP?
“What’s Next?” for now. It might change at some point. It always changes. The music video for this song just got filmed. I am really excited about this release. It should be out in around two weeks now. It was directed, produced and written by Zoé Pelloux and the amazing drawings are from Caio Slikta.
Do you find it different being solo rather than part of a band?
Yes. I don’t prefer one or the other, but it differed for sure. In a band you have to compromise a lot, especially when you are six, like in the band I am part of “Charly&Faust”. You need to constantly be aware of everybody opinions to try to find the best way to do each little stuff.
In a solo project, you still have to make sure your team is happy and goes the same direction than you concerning the project development but you have more freedom. Which can be great, but also scarier for sure.
If you could work with any band/artist on a new song, who would it be and why?
LP. I am obsessed with her songs now and by the fact she can whistle so well. My friends are making fun of me because I am trying to get better at whistling and I practice everywhere now. But it is not getting better.
Will you be touring at all in 2018?
I am now working on booking shows. Since it is a new project we going to start by performing in local venues in Los Angeles, but as soon as we get a bit of experience I will start booking show in other cities for sure. If a venue read this and is interested, I am here!
What’s the music scene like LA at the moment, better than France?
It is different. It has been five years that I didn’t really have the chance to explore the French music scene, so it would be stupid of me to affirm anything, but I think that for the style of music of this specific project, Los Angeles is better for now.
What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?
Gardening. That is my new obsession, which really annoyed my roommates actually. There is salads and tomatoes everywhere on the balcony.
