Interview: Makeout talk upcoming Vans Warped Tour

Fusing propulsive punk energy, stadium-size pop prowess, alternative sizzle, and a ball-busting sense of humor, Makeout play the soundtrack to the best night of your life. Think of the Massachusetts quartet, Sam Boxold (vocals, guitar), Tyler Young (guitar), Alex Lofton (bass), and Scott Eckel (drums), as the illegitimate offspring of Paramore, All Time Low, and Steel Panther, and you’ll be halfway there. Now Make out have been announced to play Vans Warped Tour from 21st June – 5th August 2018. The band released their full length album, The Good Life, last year via Rise Records. Check out the album below!

We managed to catch up with drummer Scott as he talked about the last ever Vans Warped Tour and more!

How pumped are you for Vans Warped Tour?

We are over the moon. Warped Tour has been so pivotal for young bands like us, and so many amazing acts have skyrocketed from the opportunity we’ve been given. So we’re pumped SO pumped.

Will it be emotional for you guys knowing its the last ever one?

To be honest it’s emotional enough just to be on the full thing. I grew up in a small country town, not even in the US and always dreamt of doing the tour. So to finally have it happen, and just in time. We’re all so excited, and it will be sad to see the full run come to an end.

How has the release of the music video of Ride It Out gone down so far with fans?

We’ve had such an amazing response with that song. I believe it just hit 500k too? I mean compared to massive artists, we’re still small fry but to us that’s huge. Let’s hit that MILL!

What was it like with Callum and Ashton from 5 Seconds of Summer with it?

Those guys are true professionals, John picked them up from the airport while we were recording/writing and just dropped them in. They had no idea they were writing with us and just smashed it out. Incredible guys and so passionate.

Can you tell something about the track no one else knows?

I’m not sure if it was Ride It Out or Clockwork, but Calum literally wrote the hook while, how I do I put this delicately, “draining the snake” haha. He was in the bathroom and just belted it out, and we ran with it.

How have the guys at Rise Records been helpful for you become the band you are today?

The team at Rise are incredible. They love music so much and are so open to all types, like we weren’t a typical fit for what they’ve released in the past, but we’re so grateful for the help and push they’ve given us as a new band. RISE FAM FOREVER!

Has the release of the Good Life down with fans?

So far really really great, the fans that have got on board show us love everyday and it’s really heartwarming. To be on the other end of that, is crazy to us. We’ve been through the fan stage before, hell we all still are going through it. But we’ve been blown away by the response, and they just keep recruiting more fans! It’s amazing.

If you could work with any band on new song, who would it be and why?

This is a tough one, I really REALLY love PVRIS, so if we ever get the chance to have Lynn Gunn on a track I’ll lose it. We have Travis, so somehow getting Mark to write with us would be incredible too. Blink have shown so much love for us, it’s mind blowing.

What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?

We all do our different things, we all still have our daily grind, which makes up appreciate the road so much more. Sam and Tyler love skating, Alex too. I’m more of a exercise, gym kind of guy. Just recently picked up some flag football as well haha. Anything to stay active.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Here’s a huge round trip, but my first real show was blink-182 when they toured Australia as a full band for the last time in 2004. That show changed my life. Shout out TB xoxo
