Interview: Unparalleled Height talk latest cover

Pittsburgh metal quartet Unparalleled Height recently revealed the video for the formation’s impressively dynamic and creative rendition of Zedd and Alessia Cara’s astonishing hit single Stay. The remarkable aspect of this cover is the group’s successfully performed intention to accentuate and emphasize on the unique aspects of the band’s characteristics and unique traits through completely re-constructing and re-forming the chart topping single, without neglecting its strongest, original features, however, as the final product – in true progressive fashion – find the members of Unparalleled Height pushing the boundaries of the sonic template and music arsenal they’ve perfected in new, exciting and dangerous directions. Stay is accessible, but technically impressive musical composition, combining captivating guitar leads, enchanting melodic developments and memorable and rewarding atmosphere, ultimately offering a deviation of sounds that perfectly embodies the realm of the innovative and unique songwriting approach, clearly displaying the group’s penchant for the heavy and prowess with catchy, more traditionally structured songs. Check out Stay below!

We managed to catch up with the band as they talked about their latest release and more!

How has the release of your recent cover Stay gone down so far with fans?

Better than we had hoped! So far, the reception of it has been nothing short of great. As it keeps spreading, it will be interesting to see the reaction we get. We didn’t know what to expect since we were covering a pop song. As a metal band, that can be risky waters to tread in. But it has gone quite well so far.

Can you tell us something about the release no one else knows?

We wanted to make the song our own, yet add our own elements to it. There were a few ways we did this. Our good friend and producer, Grant McFarland, had me layer my voice in a synth like aspect in the chorus. It is definitely in the back of the mix, but if you look for it, you can hear it. That was really awesome to piece together!

What made you chose this particular song to cover?

We knew we wanted to cover a pop song. The question then became, what song would create the best challenge? After going through quite a few different options, “Stay” seemed to be the best option. It really came down to the fact that we felt we could keep elements of the original, while putting our own touches on it.

What’s the alternative scene like in Pittsburgh at the moment?

It’s hard to really say. We aren’t largely involved in it, truthfully. As we have released music over the course of time, our following has grown nationally and globally. So we have tried focusing on doing our best to give our listeners new music! We do shows occasionally in Pittsburgh, since it is where we are based out of. There are many awesome venues in the city.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

That is a tough question. I can only answer for myself. For me, it would have to be Periphery, Avenged Sevenfold, or Dream Theater. Each of those are some of my biggest influences vocally. It would be interesting for me to write something to their instrumentals and see what would come about.

Are you planning on releasing an EP/Album anytime soon?

Indeed we are! We released the first half of “Resurgence”, a double EP feature, back in September of 2017. The second half, “Resurgence, Vol. 2”, will be released in the not too distant future. We are coordinating the details for that release as we speak!

Will you be touring or any festivals lined up for 2018?

There is a possibility that may happen. We have largely been focusing on creating and releasing music for the better part of the last year or more. We have some pretty cool offers that are starting to roll in. I will be interested to see what happens!

What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?

I like to work out quite a bit. Additionally, I run a few businesses that are very new. I am also working on a book at the moment.
