Interview: Ay Wing talks latest EP!

Berlin artist Ay Wing writes, records, produces and performs her own unique candy-coloured, gritty beat driven, champagne pop that you can shake your muffin top to.

On her latest EP Ice Cream Dream, Ay Wing returns with three fluorescent tracks. The songs showcase an eclectic new sound shaped by her adoration of musical detail – each feeling different and unheard, yet strangely familiar. Press play and join a psychedelic voyage to uncharted, thoughtful depths beneath a thick and seductive layer of sweetness.

We managed to catch up with Ay Wing as the artist talks about her latest EP and more!

So how has the release of Ice Cream Dream gone so far?

I’ve been getting a lot of Feedback from all over the world which is great.

Can you tell us something about the EP no one else knows?

The hook of Strange is actually a quote from an old man that asked us for directions. We were grocery shopping in our PJ’s, as you do in Berlin, and when we couldn’t help him he basically shook his head and uttered „Are you strange?“ bevor he left. We liked that a lot, so we kept it.

What’s your favourite track from the release?

At the moment my favourite song is “Ice Cream Dream”. It’s the most playful, quirky song and also one of the newest. I guess I always like the newest songs the best. And of course it reminds me of the summer that will definitely come soon.

So you pretty much done everything by yourself for this EP, how difficult has it been?

To create an EP is always difficult and intensive – choosing the songs, the recording-process, mixing, mastering, producing, cover artwork, promotion, video shoot, editing – it’s too much. It would be nice to do only this for a couple months and really focus on the result, which sadly couldn’t be further from reality. But I still loved every moment of that proess. And I have had help along the way by some amazing people, like René Flächsenhaar that came up with the bassline for „Ice Cream Dream“, my amazing live band that jammed those songs into their current form, Shuko (Christoph Bauss) and his mixing Engineer Benjamin Herrmann that helped to shape the sound and pimped those bedroom recordings into something awesome.

If you could work with any band or artist on a new track who would it be and why?

Gorillaz or any other projects Damon Albarn is involved in. I love Damon Albarn’s work. It’s so versatile – sometimes deep and dark, sometimes funny and playful, I just love that mix.

He is very tasteful in his writing and the people he picks to collaborate with.

Have you found it more difficult being a solo female artist in this industry?

It used to bother me when people only saw the pretty blonde girl that sings and then be surprised once they figure out that I actually write and produce my own stuff. It felt like I needed to prove myself more so than my male counterparts. Nowadays I try not to be bothered too much by it and surround myself with people that remind me I don’t have to give into this type of thinking. First and foremost I’m an artist and keep demanding to be treated as such.

What’s the alternative scene like in Berlin at the moment?

Well, Berlin is Berlin, so there are a lot of art spaces and alternative concert venues and enough room for every crazy thing you can think of. But I’m the wrong person to ask, I’m not leaving my dungeon (aka my studio) that often. I’m happy when I get some sun shine these days so I don’t get too pale and perish by lack of vitamin D. It’s the musicians way of life, I guess.

What do you get up to in your spare time when not working on music?

Jogging, yoga, walks in nature and hang out with friends. Basically I became a Hippie.

Will you be touring at all this year?

I’m doing some shows in the UK in April, followed by Germany and Switzerland in May and than France in autumn.
