Interview: Backwards Dancer talk latest track

In celebration of the vinyl release of their critically-beloved 2017 self-titled full length, Backwards Dancer recently released October; a brand new track that will be included on the new vinyl. Already revered for their raw, emotive lyrics and progressive arrangements, October is arguably the biggest sounding track the band has released to date. October rives with vitriol and dynacism as Zack Shaw’s vocals fight to drive home the song’s point over a wall of distortion and cannon-like percussion. The track can be streamed now exclusively on Soundcloud, and you can preorder the Self Titled vinyl on Equal Vision Records.

Formed in 2014, following Zack Shaw’s departure from The Hotelier (which he co-founded, under the original moniker The Hotel Year), Backwards Dancer has quickly developed their unique style that navigates deep intrapersonal emotion into thoughtfully orchestrated compositions. Their recent self-titled full length explores the concept of dependence, and the human condition in general, in a raw and dynamic way, in the context of relationships, use of substances, money, overall mental health and more.

Backwards Dancer are currently supporting Say Anything on their tour celebrating the 10th Anniversary of their seminal double album In Defense of The Genre. Full dates can be found below and you can buy your tickets now through the Say Anything website.

We managed to catch up with the band as they talked about their latest track and more!

So how has the response of ‘October’ been with fans?

So far the reception has been positive. We can’t wait to put the song into our live rotation. I honestly try to avoid looking at people’s opinions on our work.

Can you tell us something about the track nobody knows?

It’s a song about the industry and the dichotomy between creativity and monetizing your creativity.

Will you be releasing an EP or Album this year?

We really hope to be dropping something this summer/ fall. Stay posted and we’ll let you know.

What is your favourite track from the upcoming release?

We don’t have anything set for release but on our previous release my favorite song is probably Vanishing, Panicking. I’m really excited to release new music though!

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

I really want to work with Conor Oberst.

Would you ever consider touring Europe and the UK?

We would love to tour Europe, given the opportunity. All of the friends I’ve talked to from Europe seem to be amazing!

How has your current tour been with Say Anything?

The Say Anything tour was incredible. We love them and their whole crew so much. They’re such genuine people and it was surreal to play to the Say Anything audience every night.

What venue are you most looking forward to playing in the rest of the tour?

We were really looking forward to playing Dallas, the last time we played there was great. We will be back there soon though!
