Interview: No Liars talk latest single

Canadian band No Liars recently dropped their video for their latest single taken from our forthcoming debut album, The Cause & The Cure.

Guilt Trip is a song about regret and isolation – a cautionary tale about what happens when you let trivial things get between you and the people you care about, only realising once it’s too late to make amends. It’s about that feeling of not being able to say that certain something to a certain someone before it’s too late and then having that weigh heavily upon yourself thinking… ‘I could have done this differently.’

While the band were in Toronto for Canadian Music Week last spring, they met up with a friend to watch some hockey and wound up at a video production space called 276 Sterling Studio. This lead to the performance part of the video.

As a band, they have decided the song warranted a story so No Liars got some talented local actors, Connor Tait and Zach Rousseau, to help them bring the new single to life. Mike Morash from Cambiguous Productions helped bring this second phase to life and tie the whole story together. The band only had a day to shoot in four locations, including a party scene that generously had beer donated by Lighthouse Brewing.

No Liars then shot the beginning scenes at their lead singer and guitarist Noah’s house, then progressed into downtown and Chinatown where we filmed the remainder of the video including a party scene in Fan Tan Alley.

For The Cause & The Cure, the band enlisted the help of Jesse Gander from Rain City Recorders (Japandroids, White Lung, The Pack a.d.) to record, as well as Joao Carvalho (Alexisonfire, Arkells, Silverstein) on mastering duties. Check out Guilt Trip below!

We managed to catch up with guitarist/singer Noah Edwards as he talked about the latest single and more!

So how has the response of ‘Guilt Trip’ been with fans?

It’s been really well received so far! We’ve been playing this song live for a little while now so it was great to finally get it up on the interwebs.

Can you tell us something about the track nobody knows?

It was partially inspired by the fear of losing my grandmother before having a chance to rekindle the close relationship I had to her in my childhood.

How pumped are you for the release of the ‘The Cause and the Cure?’

SO PUMPED. We recorded these songs back in January of 2017 so it’s been fun finally rolling them out.

What is your favourite track from the upcoming release?

The Displaced is one I’m super excited to release, we got really adventurous on that song and got to explore more of our melodic/post rock sounds. At the same time, Societies Fall and Justified Sacrifice just rip and we’re hoping people catch on to the gang vocals when playing those live!

What’s the alternative rock scene like in Canada at the moment?

Honestly it’s great! We have some great bands like PUP and Japandroids at the forefront, and then all sorts of rad punk bands like Comeback Kid and Propagandhi continuing to put out amazing records.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

We have one that’s in its early stages that our singer Moe would love to have Ben Kowalewicz from Billy Talent sing on – they’re another influential Canadian band that would be great to work with! I personally would love to work with Kurt Ballou from Converge because that guy has amazing songs, and has been responsible for recording some of my favorite records.

Would you ever consider touring Europe and the UK?

One hundred percent, we’d love to make it over there as soon as it’s feasible. Touring in Canada can mean 11-12 hour drives between cities where you can sometimes cross several countries in Europe over that same distance! There seem to be big scenes for the type of music we’re doing in the UK and Germany so the sooner we can make it over the better.

How was it playing at Canadian Music Week?

It was a wild experience, we managed to play shows almost every day that we were over there and met a lot of really great people at the showcases. Some great bands that are definitely worth checking out are Heart Attack Kids, romancer, Life in a Vacuum and OUTPUT. All great bands making it happen!
