SONS released their blistering fourth single, Rise late last year, via Till Deaf Do Us Party Records across iTunes and all digital platforms. Following on from the successes of their first three singles, Reptiles and A Love Song? and Zealot, the Brighton duo return in supercharged form with their newest track. If their previous singles were big, Rise is blatantly anthemic, a jarring atonal guitar riff paves the way for a chorus drop that is intense but mammoth. Rise showcases SONS ability to write sharp and catchy hooks while never compromising on their message. In times of political uncertainty, the newest single is the band’s most direct comment.
SONS is made up of brothers Lee and Nick Meldrum who have been making music with one another for little over a year. Recently, the band had wildly popular shows at Reading Festival, The Great Escape, Soccer Six, as well as a number of gigs across the UK. Rise is the band’s second release via Till Deaf Do Us Party Records sister label to Alcopops Records. Airplay support including Huw Stephens and Phil Taggart Specialist Chart, BBC Radio 1; Huw Stephen’s Introducing Tip Of The Week with Playlisting on all 38 BBC Introducing Regions among many more! We managed to catch up with SONS as they talk about their latest release and more!
How was the initial response been for the music video for Rise?
It’s been good mostly. There have been a couple of grumbles about the use of the the words ‘Censored for the easily offended’ but to be honest that was what we were both expecting and hoping for with the idea.
Can you tell us something about the track nobody knows?
Hmm… well the vocal was re done for the single. Originally It was much more scathing about the subject matter but I decided it didn’t need to be so attacking to get its point across.
WIll you be working on an EP or album this year?
Yes, 100 percent yes. There are already plans for a hard copy EP with all the singles followed by anther EP made solely of new material. We are also hoping by the end of the year to be starting on a full fledged album too.
If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
That’s a hard one! There are so many bands around us at the moment on the indie label scene that we would love to collaborate with. For me though working with Deftones would be a dream come true.
How pumped are you to be supporting Dead! this weekend?
We are massively excited, they are a great band so can’t wait to see them live!
If you could play at any venue in the world, where would it be and why?
Another hard one! I’d say The Crocodile in Seattle, it’s the birth place of grunge!
What’s the alternative scene like in Brighton at the moment?
It’s good! There are some amazing bands to keep your eyes on, up and comers like Thieves By The Code, Dirty White Fever And Rodeo Death Burger as well as the more we’ll establish guys like Tigercub and The Wytches.
What was the first gig you all ever attended?
It was for a band called Nada Surf at the underworld in Camden. It was a great night! We didn’t realise it was an over 18 night and we were both still in our early teens so we weren’t allowed in. Dejected and it being our first night in London we just sat on the steps watching all the other people going in when one of the roadies saw us and told the band what had happened. They managed to get us in on AAA passes with their manager as chaperone to make sure we didn’t drink haha.
