Interview: Shanghai Blues talk latest single

The East London quartet Shanghai Blues recently released their brand new single Those Three Words on the 26th July, following on from their first headline UK mini tour with a sold out show in London.

Those Three Words was produced, mixed and mastered by Oz Craggs (Feed The Rhino, Neck Deep, Mallory Knox) and gives us a glimpse of what Shanghai Blues has to offer, as it carves a path through raw emotion and untouched mindsets. It merges into a tense combination of hypnotic melodies with the layering of rustic guitars that later kicks into prodigious crescendo, as poignant and stripped back lyrics liaise with feelings of lingering hope. Leaving an impactful imprint, it hints to moments from their past single releases while showing the progression of mature growth the band is heading towards.

Shanghai Blues are new arrivals to the music scene, bursting out of the starting block in mid-2016, and wasting no time garnering support through their raucous and energetic live shows. Over the last 12 months, Shanghai Blues have been building a solid fan base, after grabbing the attention off tastemakers at Spotify (The Official Indie List/Hot New Bands/Fresh Finds), Apple Music (Best Of The Week), BBC Introducing and various international radio stations including USA, Canada and the Netherlands. This saw their previous single Night Tears clock up an impressive 62K+ plays on Spotify and 20K+ plays on Apple Music. Check out the new single below!

Those Three Words by SHANGHAI BLUES

We managed to catch up with the band as they talked about the latest single and more!

So how has the release of Those Three Words gone so far?

It’s gone great so far! We’ve had a great reaction from fans so that’s always nice to hear.

Can you tell us anything about this single no one knows?

Only our drummer knows exactly what the three words hinted at in the song’s title mean and he won’t tell us, haha.

Will there be even more music on it’s way soon?

We may or may not be dropping another single very very soon.

Is there likely to be an EP/Album released this year?

There won’t be an EP/Album but we will be heading back into the studio later in September with some really exciting stuff planned.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Does it have to be a band? We’d love to get J Hus on a track, fucking love that guy.

What’s like being featured by the likes of Apple Music and BBC?

It’s great to see these big names liking and promoting our music, we never expected to get this far when we first started out so we’re always extremely humbled when these things happen!

How was your recent headline tour?

It was fucking sick. Playing shows around the country and meeting different people is always fun and we’re looking forward to getting back out there and playing in more places around the UK and beyond!

How was your recent London show?

It was probably one of our favourite shows ever. We fucking loveeee playing hometown shows, even had a fan fly all the way over to see us from New York which is actually mental!
