Interview: Young States talk upcoming EP

All female band Young States take their cues from the rougher side of mid 00s rock while bands like Brand New, Mallory Knox and Taking Back Sunday are all big influences too. The Norwich band will release their upcoming EP, Past Truths | Present Lies that will be out on 29th September.

Check out Over It By Now below!

We managed to catch up with Young States’ drummer Molly as she talks about their upcoming EP and more!

How pumped are you for the release of your EP Past Truths | Present Lies ?

So pumped! We’ve had the songs written and the EP done for so long now, you just want to get it out and release it for everyone to listen to! So I’m super excited to hear what people think and to hear our more refined sound, we’ve definitely come along way from our last EP two years ago!

Can you tell us anything about this no one knows?

We recorded the EP in Sheffield and we were there for 10 days, so at first, you know, we were all excited, we are doing what we love constantly, no distractions, for 10 days straight and it’s great! It was all pretty chill and cool to hang out but then after a few nights in everyone just starts to get strange and hyper, and the weirdness sets in…which definitely made it interesting?! We were just constantly together, all in this one tiny Travelodge room, all crammed in and we would leave early in the morning to go the studio, be there all day non stop recording into the evening, come back, eat pot noodles (maybe that was just me), and sleep in what were essentially kids beds…which were not comfortable! It was so much fun though, everyone loved it and I can’t wait to do it again! At least we will all know to expect the ‘weird’!

What is your favourite song from this release?

That’s a hard question, I like them all for different reasons! But overall I’d have to say ‘Memory’. It’s one of the one’s I’ve always been fully content with right from the start. I just love the instrumentation and how it progresses, and personally I’m really proud of it! I think the chorus is really catchy and that the song as a whole is super relatable, especially for young people around our ages! Definitely one of my favourites to play live!

How has the release of Over it By Now gone so far with fans?

So far so good! It’s all been really positive which is awesome! The general consensus is that it is really catchy and people like the direction we have gone in, and that’s always good to hear! That’s what we want and strive for! This song definitely gives a taste of what the rest of the new EP is like, and people seem excited and intrigued to hear more, so I’m definitely not complaining with how it has been received, I’m very happy! We all are!

What does it mean to you guys getting recognition by the likes of Kerrang!?

It’s ridiculous! It’s always awesome when we get a review or a feature from a magazine, but when it’s one like Kerrang! it’s so amazing! They are just so renowned and one of the ones that everyone knows and aims for! I definitely felt like I achieved something when we got recognition from them and was really proud of what we had produced and all the hard work we had put in!

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?

Brand New, they would be awesome! I wouldn’t know what to expect at all and I couldn’t begin to imagine what the song would be like, it definitely would be something different! I just love their sound, and in different ways, all of us are inspired by them when it comes to writing! I would love to write a really epic, atmospheric sounding song with them, they are one of the best when it comes to that, for sure!

What do you guys get up to in your spare time?

All of us are really creative and most of our interests revolve around that really! I know Georgia likes art and I generally like to write and read! But music is definitely at the forefront of everything we do, so even without the band specifically we all love to write music, play, or go to gigs lots etc. Personally I love the business side of the music industry and I love finding out as much as I can about it and will always read books or articles on how it works!

So do you think the alternative music industry is becoming better at accepting female artists?

It’s definitely a lot better than it used to be that’s for sure! Growing up, there were never that many female artists around in the alternative music industry that were in the spotlight for me to look up to! Most of the rock bands I knew were all male, and most of the prominent female artists were considered in the ‘Pop’ genre. It’s so much better now though, not so much in ‘all girl bands’ but definitely in female fronted bands. With the rise of bands like ‘PVRIS’, ‘Wolf Alice’ and ‘Marmozets’ I think it’s slowly becoming more accepted and normal to see such big, successful, strong female musicians and front women. One day, I would like it to not be unusual for an all girl rock band to be successful and in the limelight!
