Interview: Jillette Johnson talks latest album

Singer/songwriter/pianist named Jillette Johnson recently released All I Ever I See In You Is Me. She has been favourably compared to artists and composers like Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple, and Stevie Nicks. She writes memorable, smart songs that pack a big emotional wallop, and she’s also an abundantly gifted singer and pianist with remarkable range. She’s also a really funny, keenly observant person, and a great storyteller.

The album was produced by Grammy-winner Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson). Contrary to what that list of artists might suggest, Jillette’s music wouldn’t be classified as country or Americana. That said, Cobb’s spare, minimal production suits her songs and voice really well. Check out Jillette performing Bunny below!

We managed to catch up with the singer before the release of the album as she talked about the release and more!

How pumped are you for the release of ‘All I Ever See In You Is Me’?

Very

Tell us something about the album no one knows

The second track on the record, Love is Blind, wasn’t supposed to be on it. But after a little too much tequila it made its way on in one of the last days. It was a happy drunken accident.

How is this different from ‘Whiskey & Frosting and Water in a Whale’

I’m older, it’s much less shiny, much more raw and it took a fraction of the time to make. Also Dave Cobb isn’t exactly what I’d call a pop producer, so it lives in a much different world than what I made with my previous producers. Plus we tracked everything live in one room, which was not the case before.

What is your favourite song from the release?

Bunny

What was it like working with Dave Cobb on the album?

Liberating and eye opening. He works really fast and does a wonderful job of capturing the magic in a moment, which meant not doing a lot of takes. He never wanted to force anything. We also had a blast, like rolling on the floor laughing kind of thing. Not only do I have an enormous amount of respect and gratitude for what he did with my songs, but I like him a lot as a guy.

If you could work with any band or artist on a new song, who would it be and why?

I’d love to work with Beck. Rhythmically and sonically he really does it for me. He’s unafraid and subtle at the same time. And I just think he makes the most beautiful music.

Will you be touring at all this year?

Very much a lot yes.

Will you ever tour the UK?

Yes. I’m excited.

So you support the anti-bullying campaign, Hey U.G.L.Y, does this mean a lot to you?

It does! I think every kid deserves to be supported and seen. I think the world can get better if our kids feel like they have something to offer it, and are simultaneously made accountable for each other.

What do you get up to in your spare time while not writing music?

I do a lot of yoga, love to read, and have recently gotten back into tennis. I also go in and out of being really excited about cooking. And I write non-musical things too. And I have a horrible online shopping addiction.
