Dutch four-piece Dakota recently released their new single Silver Tongue, an ode to coping with that person in your life who tries to knock your dreams and goals at every opportunity. The track embraces the sentiment of always keeping your head held high and your eyes on the prize, never giving in to the naysayers. Dakota managed to take the first steps in their own dreams and goals with previous EP Leda and debut single Icon, which saw critical acclaim came from the likes of Noisey and Nylon.
Dakota seamlessly blend California feels with Garage Rock and Dream Pop; and their music has remarkable skill in lulling the listener to close their eyes and drift away to the dreamy and hazy music – just before they take a swing and whack you right around the ears with raving guitar riffs and pounding rhythms. Having recently played some major festivals including the Great Escape, look out for Dakota as they make their way in the underground indie scene. You can check out Silver Tongue below!
We managed to catch up with Lisa Brammer, Lana Kooper, Annemarie van den Born and Tessa Raadman as they talked about their latest single, new music and more!
So how has the release of Silver Tongue gone so far?
We think it’s going great! We’ve got a lot of positive reactions and reviews on Silver Tongue, and we’ve got featured by really great online platforms such as The Line Of Best Fit, The Violet Wave and Noisey NL.
Can you tell us anything about the single that no one knows?
Lisa: Well, the people who I’m talking about in this song, don’t know that I’m singing about them and actually really like the song and let’s keep it that way, haha.
Is this any different from your previous EP Leda?
We think it is. It’s more upbeat and it sounds a bit less dreamy than Leda. With Leda we wanted the songs to sound as close to our live performance as possible, while with Silver Tongue we chose a more produced sound.
Will there be new music and possible EP/Album this year?
We’re actually writing new songs as we speak and hope to release an album in 2018. For this year we have some tracks up our sleeve 😉
If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
We would love to work with Klangstof! In may we were playing The Great Escape festival in Brighton, and we met them at the Dutch Impact showcase. We really liked their show and they were very nice guys. When writing songs it’s really important to have a good connection with each other, and we think we could be on the same page.
What is it like getting the support from the likes of Noisey?
It’s great! A while ago we really didn’t think that it was possible to get our music featured by Noisey because it’s such a big and well known platform, so it’s definitely a dream come true!
What do you guys get up to in your spare time?
We love food, Netflix, and hula hooping.
Will there be a tour at all this year?
Yes! We’ve been selected for Popronde, which is some sort of showcase festival in a different city in the Netherlands every day for about three months, starting in September. We’re also looking into the possibility of touring outside of the Netherlands.
How was Valkhof Festival recently?
Valkhof was great! Such an awesome festival and Nijmegen is a wonderful city. Not only did we play there but we got to see Amber Arcades live and we played on the same stage as The Homesick and Iguana Death Cult, so we couldn’t have been happier. And the crowd was absolutely amazing!
How is it different playing at festivals rather than live venues?
In a way, the reaction you get when playing at a festival feels more sincere. When you’re playing at a festival, the crowd is free and can walk away when they don’t like a band. So the people who are staying are definitely interested in what you’re doing on stage. At a venue it’s probably more difficult for people to walk away so they end up talking or socializing while a band is playing. I guess that affects the way we experience the show.
