Sam Pickett is a singer of his dark fairy tales but most people don’t know that he was also ex-frontman of dark punk/rock band The Wicked Venetians.
After The Wicked Venetians went on hiatus Sam went in to a musical solitary confinement for over a year. What emerged was a different beast.
Sam performed recently and released live session tracks Velvet , Lilacs and Exit Asylum which are all songs that were written and recorded by the singer and produced by Rob Stanbury at Powerhouse Studios 2017. But now the singer is set to release a new single titled Papaya Cloud which is due out on 26th July.
You can check out Lilacs below!
We manage to catch up with Sam as he talks about his upcoming single, new music and more!
So how pumped are you for the release of Papaya Cloud?
I’m very excited to release this song and hopefully a thousand more.
Can you tell us anything about this release?
It’s out on July 26th on ITunes, Spotify and all major music platforms. It was recorded in three very quick and easy sessions at Powerhouse Studios with my partner in crime and producer, Rob Stanbury. Some of the drums on the track are the pair of us bashing away at floor toms like demented rain forest tribesman. When the track was complete we got hammered and … SECTION REMOVED FOR LEGAL REASONS
How is this different to previous releases Velvet , Lilacs and E xit Asylum?
This is my first official release, I spent over a year experimenting in the studio and those songs before were off shoots from this on the road to the sound I’ve reached now which is more vibrant, acoustic based pop essentially.
Will there be a EP/Album to follow this single?
If I’m still alive… yes, if not… possibly.
Will there be any gigs to coincide with the release of the upcoming song?
Despite the dark forces at work trying to shut down every music venue in the UK, I am indeed playing wherever will have me! My next two shows are at Basingstoke Festival, Unplugd Stage and then Cavefest later in the month.
What mainly influenced you for the name and the lyrics of the track?
I wrote this song whilst swimming off the coast of Thailand at sunset, the sun was a gigantic red grapefruit… it didn’t feel like I was on the planet Earth. I just did a bit of sick in my mouth at how cliche that sounds, I guess you had to be there…
What bands influenced you while recording the new song?
I was listening to a lot of classical music in Thailand for a reason that now escapes me so there is a bit of Handel in there along with some Tove Lo, John Frusciante (Shadows Collide With People era )and Bjork… always Bjork…
