Canadian garage-punk two-piece Dearly Beloved are pushing on and keeping the rock ‘n’ roll flame alive with the primal energy of hardcore punks, Black Flag, the broodiness of Sabbath and the vocal interplay of acts like Pixies and X. Produced by Daniel Rey (Ramones and Misfits), their last album Admission, was recorded at Dave Grohl’s Studio 666 on the famed, 70s era Neve 8028 analogue console that gave us Nevermind, as well as more than a hundred certified-gold and platinum records. Now the band will tour with Bash & Pop in the UK from 27th June as they begin at Glasgow’s King Tuts. Check out the band’s latest album, Admission, below!
We managed to catch up with the band as they talked about touring in the UK, latest music and more!
So how pumped are you for the upcoming tour with Bash & Pop?
Incredibly so. We haven’t toured since February and to say we’re chomping at the bit would be an understatement. A rather bad ass guitar player by the name of JC Sandoval is coming out with us on this run and he’s been crushing it at rehearsal so we’re stoked to hit the road as usual.
Is there a venue you are most looking forward to playing?
Our last show at King Tut’s in Glasgow with Swervedriver was unreal. What a blast. Definitely looking forward to that one. Also I’ve heard the venue in Ramsgate is special. Never been there before so looking forward to that as well. Shit, all four venues are amazing!
What was the first gig you yourselves ever attended?
The first show I ever asked to go to was The Clash at Maple Leaf Gardens. With my best friend at the time, Pete Cook. We were so young that my aunt had to take us. We were also so young that we couldn’t quite figure out what that sweet, smokey smell was. Pete Cook and I would later solve that mystery.
How has the release of Admission gone down with fans so far?
Some people have been kind enough to write us to let us know that in their opinion we hit the mark / nailed it or whatever … that sort of thing. That’s cool. There may be others that prefer the feel of Enduro or Hawk vs Pigeon. That’s cool, too. They’re very different.
Can you tell us anything about the album we might not know?
With a 2016 release in Canada ‘Admission’ keeps a streak alive of an album every two years since starting the band.
2016 – Admission
2014 – Enduro
2012 – Hawk vs Pigeon
2010 – They Will Take Up Serpents
2008 – Repo Repo Repo
2006 – You Are The Jaguar
What was it like working at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 and meeting the man himself?
Working there has been an honour. We continue to do so. John Paul Jones , Lee Ving and Paul McCartney have stood in that room and plugged into that console. What a trip. So a day at 606 has me on my toes and inspires me to make the most of what I’ve got. I love every minute of being there and look forward to more later this summer. Dave Grohl was a pleasure to meet and he makes some mean ribs, I’ll tell you that much. Never in a million years could I have imagined we’d record in a studio like that when we started up, let alone break bread, drink beer and talk shop with someone as well-known, accomplished and awesome as Dave Grohl, in the process.
Did Grohl give you any tips on performing and are you big fans of Foo Fighters?
Ha no tips, no. That first Foos album rules and they’ve written about a gazillion hits since then that people adore. And they let us record in their studio when they’re not using it. Nothing but respect and admiration for that crew.
What’s the alternative scene in Canada right now?
Lots of good stuff out there. Tanya Tagaq, A Tribe Called Red, Pup, Japandroids, Black Mountain, Little You Little Me, Feist, Terra Lightfoot, Vast Robot Armies, Kaytranada. Still waiting on the next Sons Of Freedom to make the scene, however. How is that not a thing yet?
