We managed to catch up with the band’s guitarist Paul Callow as they talked about the upcoming EP and more!

So how pumped are you for the release of Chronos?
We are super pumped to see how people will react to Chronos.
It was a huge task for all of us, the first recording with a producer and also the first time we have recorded with a full band. I think it’ll turn a few heads for sure.

Can you tell us a little bit about the EP?
The EP is a mix of old and new songs. A couple of the songs we’ve had sitting in the song bank for quite a while and then a couple of other songs where pretty brand new. It was very interesting to see how some of the songs developed in the recording process and what each member added into the songs. Collaboration isn’t always easy, but it definitely provides a well rounded sound and one that each of us can be proud of individually, but also as a band.

How has the initial response of Recoil gone so far with fans?
Recoil has always been a fan favourite live. We really wanted to capture the “live” feel and energy with this track and so far we’ve had no complaints. People get really energised by Recoil and go mental when we play it live. It’s awesome.

What is your favourite song from the EP?
Tied Around is a favourite for me. It has a really strange verse riff and groove and the chorus has a beautiful ugliness to it that I love. Mark ties everything together with some really interesting vocals and the bridge section vocally is really something amazing. I can’t wait till people hear that track! It will give Recoil a run for its money for sure.

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
Personally I would absolutely love to do a song with Bjork. It would be really cool to do something melodic and heavy with her. For me that would be amazing and hopefully I wouldn’t get too “fan boy” about it and keep my composure. But I doubt it. She’s definitely one of my music idols.
The rock scene is pretty strong in Melbourne. It’s a shame that more rock isn’t played on commercial radio as almost every live venue in Melbourne has rock bands playing in them each night of the week. And I highly recommend getting out there and seeing bands because there really is a lot of talented bands/musicians out there. We have dodged the issues that Sydney is having, but it still needs to be supported. There’s a lot of passion out there in Melbourne and pretty determined bands. It would be great to be able to have a thriving industry here so we all don’t seek other shores. I think Melbourne has suffered though with the major touring festivals cancelling and also with venues closing left right and centre.

Will you be on tour at all to coincide the release of the EP?
For sure. We will definitely tour this EP and we have a few things in the pipeline… But we can’t say anything at the moment.

What was your first gig that you ever went to?
I can’t believe I’m saying this but I was front and centre at a Cliff Richard show when I was about 3 years old. All I remember from that show was him playing a red Fender Strat’ and I thought it was freaking awesome! But the first gig that I paid for and went to was The Smashing Pumpkins on the Melancholy tour. They played for 3 hours and it totally blew my mind!

What was the funniest moment while recording the EP?
I think for me the funniest thing was trying to record while being totally sleep deprived. I can highly recommend NOT recording when you have a 3 month old baby. I totally get why sleep deprivation is used as torture. I also have to say a BIG thank you to my wife for putting up with the loud guitars, long hours in the house and a lot of time away. It was a crazy time to say the least.
