Interview: Hey Charlie talk latest single

London’s Hey Chalie recently made their grand entrance  with a video for their stomping, anthemic first single HEY. Co-directed by the band themselves, the video showcases full throttled, blistering grungey riffs, juxtaposed by pop hooks and contagious choruses.

HEY was produced by Spring King’s Tarek Musa at Grand Cru Studios, located on a barge in London’s St. Katherine’s Dock. The track captures their love of 90s grunge and punk, whilst wholeheartedly embracing their girl gang mentality and is a statement of things to come from HEY CHARLIE later this year.

As seen in HEY, the band’s visual identity represents their strong union, and acts as a wrecking ball towards  the stereotype that you can’t be both feminine and play heavy music.

The initial tremors that led to the formation of Hey Charlie, took place in early 2015 when Lizz (guitarist & vocalist) and Sophie (bassist & vocalist) crossed paths whilst studying in London. Their friendship spawned from a mutual love of music, spurring their decision to form a band. Wanting to inspire other girls to also pick up instruments, Lizz and Sophie embarked on an arduous journey for the final piece of the HEY CHARLIE puzzle. After a formidable search for the missing link, the girls finally found drummer Lauren and hitting it off immediately, Hey Charlie was born.

Fast gaining a reputation as an unpredictable, cyclonic live force, Hey Charlie perked up the ears of Kerrang! who have asked the band to perform at their Fresh Blood night in October featuring some of the most anticipated names in British rock including WSTR and Grumble Bee. Further tour dates will be announced soon. Check out their single below!

We managed to catch up with the trio as they talked about their latest single, Kerrang! Fresh Blood event and more!

So you’ve just released your first single ‘Hey’, what has the initial response been for this?
It’s been really overwhelming, it’s done better than we really imagined it would have. The day after the release ‘Hey’ got featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday Playlist which was amazing, it’s our favourite playlist.

Will there be new music in the coming months, if so can you tell us anything about this?
We are hoping to put out an EP in near future, support some cool bands and get some touring experience under our belts and keep writing!

Will there be a tour at all this year?

We’re going to be playing a London headline show! It will be announced soon. Check back for further dates!!

So you’ve been announced for Kerrang’s Fresh Blood event on 19th October, how pumped are you for this?

We’ve always been big fans of anything Kerrang! growing up-so it’s a pretty nostalgic feeling to be able to do a show with them. 10/10 excited!

How is it being supported by the likes of Kerrang!?
It’s fucking sick!

If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
We have a list of bands/artists we are obsessed with including: Arctic Monkeys, Jack White and the guys from SWMRS. Working with any of them would be unreal.

Who has the best fashion sense out of you three?
I think we all have our individual styles (pretty funny because we wear matching outfits in the band)

What was the funniest moment while recording your latest single?
Hanging out/recording with Tarek Musa (Spring King) meant the whole thing was joooookes. He brings the craic.

What do you get up to in your spare time outside the band?
Well currently we are all still working different jobs to get by- so that takes up a lot of our time. Otherwise you’ll find us at the pub, going to gigs etc- just normal shit people our age do.
