Toronto’s Midday Swim recently released Hold on Tight. The song is from their sophomore EP Climbing Out Of Caves which is due out later this year. For the video, the band and director were inspired by their mutual admiration of films like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Pulp Fiction, and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Both the song and video were made in an attempt to capture the spirit of childhood.
We caught up with with the band as they talked about the latest track and more!
So how has the release of ‘Hold on Tight’ been so far?
The release has been great! We’ve had lots of people reach out to us to say they like the whimsical nature of the video. People in England, Canada and the US have added the song to differnent playlists and we think it’s awesome how we see it being enjoyed all over the world.
Tell us a bit about the track.
The track ‘Hold On Tight’ wasn’t chosen as the single until after the recordings were all done. After we took a step back to listen to the EP we reelized that the heart of the album was in that song. It’s delivers a positive universal message that we think everyone can connect with, it’s kind of in the same vein as some soul songs like ‘Lean On Me’.
How pumped are you for the release of your EP Climbing Out of Caves?
We are really looking forward to drop the EP. It’s got a good mix of songs with different attitudes and feels.
If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
Would love to work with Spoon. They always capture beautiful performances on their recordings and they don’t rely on studio tricks to pull it off. Just straightforward good song writing.
What has been your funniest moment while recording the EP?
Definitely some of the gear breaking during the recording days while we were out of town. That was pretty funny.
What does it mean to you when fans listen to your music?
It means a lot to us. We try and write music that people from all over can connect with. We love it when fans message or post about the videos and songs if they dig the sound.
What was your first gig tat you ever went to?
Bob Dylan in Toronto.
What’s the music scene like in Toronto?
It’s a friendly music scene in Toronto, lots of good people and lots of diversity. Always something fun to check out or a touring band to catch as the roll through.
What do you get up to in your spare time outside the band?
Just put in a garden at our friends house that we rehearse at, spending time outside and hanging out on Toronto Island.
