There are two wonderful things about choosing to record and release a fuzzy, attitude laden cover of a semi-obscure Joey Ramone song for Halloween – One is that in choosing a Halloween cover, Palmyra Delran and The Doppel Gang have not gone with one of the 20 obvious and basic Halloween party classics, nor have they decided to hit the mine of Misfits covers that most would. The other is that Delran at no point attempts an impression of the late Ramone – Something almost impossible to resist for most.
That said, this is still extremely faithful – some added fun noise for atmosphere and the perfect level of lip-curling, garage rock attitude peppered into what is otherwise a lovingly, meticulously performed cover.
Quick, dirty and with some added ghostly gnarl, this is as close to perfect as it’s possible to get when shooting for a seasonal re-creation of a lesser known track by a punk colossus. This has at least made one spook loving punk very happy indeed
