When did the initial idea for your latest single come together?
The opening line “I was trying to catch your eye” came to me many moons ago, but it took a while for the song to get written. I later found out that the opening line is suspiciously close to a lyric in John Lennon’s Jealous Guy.
How would you describe the track, to a reader that is unfamiliar with the band?
We’ll Be One is a departure from our usual sound and a move towards more organic arrangements. It’s much mellower and suave than our previous singles.
Can you tell us a bit more about the meaning behind the track?
The lyrics turned out quite nasty. It’s a song about a stalker in prison. I wanted to have a musical contrast to the rather bleak lyrics, hence the Yacht Rock leanings instead of our usual electronic approach.
How would you say that the track compares to anything you’ve done before?
I’d say We’ll Be One sounds a bit more retro than our previous songs.
What was the hardest part about putting it together, and why?
Songwriting is always hard as far as I’m concerned. It takes a lot of concentration and effort to write a good song. The secret is to be patient and dedicate a lot of time to rewriting. In this case, I decided to edit the song for the video and single release as it’s quite long in its original form. We skipped the second verse for the shorter edit, which was a hard decision to make.
Why should a reader check out the track?
I think it’s quite a good song, to be honest, and it also comes with a lovely video which we shot at a derelict prison in Barcelona. It’s worth checking out.
What else can you tell us about the track, that we haven’t covered in this interview?
I played drums on the song, apart from singing lead. I wanted to keep it as simple as possible rhythmically, as I believe it’s what the song demands. Sometimes when a drummer is very good, they find it hard to maintain a simple pattern without rolls and breaks.
