Maddox Jones has form here. Now two World Cup songs, a Euros anthem, Stuart Pearce in a music video, the Northampton singer-songwriter has quietly carved out a lane that nobody else is occupying, and with ‘This Time We’ll Be Winning’ he’s made the case that it was always his lane to begin with.
Debuting on TalkSport, this is a song for car radios and pub speakers and the inside of a fanzone tent somewhere in New Jersey when England are 1-0 up and the whole place is losing its mind. The chorus, “some might say we’re dreaming, but I just gotta feeling, so why can’t we all believe it”, is one of those that arrives fully formed, as if it’s always existed and Jones just happened to find it first. The wordless chant that runs through the track is the real masterstroke though.
Three tournaments, three anthems. Whatever happens in the summer, England fans will have a song worth singing.
