Stone Sea talk new single ‘Stain’!

When did the initial idea for your latest single come together?

“Stain” actually started as a jam session with Connor, our previous drummer, back in Ireland. He had a drum idea for the opening section that was originally much more complex. From that groove, I came up with the first guitar riff, and the song gradually developed from there. In the end, Connor simplified his original drum part because it was a bit too hard to follow (laughs).

How would you describe the track, to a reader that is unfamiliar with the band?

A melody-driven, groovy alternative rock track with lyrics centred around opposites and their balance. I hate describing songs, though (laughs)… just check it out.

Can you tell us a bit more about the meaning behind the track?

It’s essentially about someone trying to find a balance when the mind, body and spirit are going separate ways.

How would you say that the track compares to anything you’ve done before?

All of our songs are fairly different, actually. “Stain” has a strong balance between dissonance and directness, and the drum sections are quite creative. The chorus opens up into a more expansive and almost relaxed feeling, which is a contrast to the tension in the verses. There’s also a very steady, energetic outro that drives the song home.

What was the hardest part about putting it together, and why?

Figuring out the structure. The sections changed quite a lot throughout the writing process. There are many nuances in the dynamics and harmonies, so finding the right balance between them was probably the hardest part.

Why should a reader check out the track?

Nah, if you don’t want it’s all good (reverse psychology).

What else can you tell us about the track, that we haven’t covered in this interview?

Backing vocals came out very nicely, unfortunately you won’t hear that live as currently we only have one singer in the band (laughs).
