So how has ‘Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun’ gone down with your fanbase so far?
Everyone who’s heard it so far has shown a lot of love!
Tell us something about the release that no one knows?
I made all of these songs at the same time as my first record, Mindless Meadow. Probably had all the tracks for both records written/recorded within a couple weeks.
If you could work with any band on a new song, who would it be and why?
I’d love to write with Andy Shauf. He’s a genius songwriter.
Can you tell us a bit about the meaning behind ‘Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun’?
One evening, during my first year living in LA (2019), I went out to a surf-themed bar in Venice. After a few beverages, I made my way to the bathroom. As I was peeing, I took a moment to glance at all of the posters/art on the walls. one caught my eye in particular. It read: Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun. What an awesome combination of words! I wrote it down so I wouldn’t forget it. It ended up being the perfect name for this collection of songs. It all gravitates around the idea of a wave. Life is a collection of ups & downs. I always loved the phrase “ride the wave”. As much as we’d like to be, we aren’t really in control. Better to ride the wave than to get pummelled by it.
Can you tell us about the writing and creative process for ‘Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun’?
I really found myself on a creative wave (see what I did there) during the pandemic. All the songs came really easily. Because I was using the same gear it all worked really well together as a cohesive body of work.
What was it like to self-produce ‘Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun’?
Proud to say this record is self produced. I’ve found a nice flow state when writing/recording. I really just try to get out of my own way & try and let the music tell me what to write. Trying to be a receiver, ya know?
How would you say that ‘Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun’ compares to anything that you’ve done before?
Because it was created during the same time as Mindless Meadow, it feels like it’s sister record. Though this record feels a bit more airy/colorful to me.
What do you want ‘Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun’ to do for the representation of ttwig?
Just excited to be building a catalog of music as ttwig. There is SO much more to come.
