Every Rock in Rio tells a story. Each edition holds countless memories: families gathered, young people celebrating life, children watching their first concert, couples meeting for the first time, first kisses, and moments that last forever. In 2026, it will be no different. Right from the first announcement of the new edition, it’s clear that, as Roberto Medina — creator and president of the festival — says, “some things in life are meant to last forever.” He officially announces one of the most acclaimed and successful solo artists of all time: the legend Elton John.
According to Medina, “The British icon is about to write a new chapter in the history of the festival, which was born in 1985 and has already hosted acts like Queen and Coldplay — both of whom turned their shows into something legendary.” In his only show in Brazil, Elton John will headline the Palco Mundo (World Stage) on September 7th, closing the night with a performance set to move the audience deeply. Recognized for his brilliance and one of the few artists to hold the rare EGOT title (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony), Elton John returns to Brazil after nearly a decade for what promises to be his most spectacular performance since the end of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in 2023.
Elton John says: “I’ve always had a fantastic time whenever we’ve played in Brazil. I didn’t manage to get to South America for the farewell tour, so when Rock In Rio asked me to play, I said yes immediately. I love my Brazilian fans, they hold such a special place in my heart. The energy these big one-off shows have been giving me since I stopped touring is unbeatable. As a band, we’re playing brilliantly and we’re sounding as good as we ever have, and, importantly, we’re still really loving playing together. I really cannot wait to return to Brazil next summer.”
Fans can look forward to an emotional night filled with hits that have transcended generations — Rocket Man, Your Song, Tiny Dancer, I’m Still Standing, and Candle in the Wind.Ticket sales for the Rock in Rio Card — which guarantees access to the festival before the full lineup is announced — will open on December 9 at XXh, exclusively through Ticketmaster Brasil.
Rock in Rio 2026 takes place in Cidade do Rock, at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Park, on September 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, and 13.
A legendary career
With a career spanning nearly six decades and a legacy beyond measure, Elton John is one of the most successful and celebrated solo artists in music history.
Since the beginning of his career, he has performed more than 4,600 shows across over 80 countries, captivating audiences with his charisma, unmatched stage presence, and unmistakable talent. He has sold more than 327 million records worldwide, scored over 70 Top 40 hits, and earned two diamond, 43 platinum/multi-platinum, and 26 gold albums.
His single Candle in the Wind (1997) remains the best-selling physical single in history, with over 33 million copies sold. In the U.S., Elton John is the most successful male solo artist of all time. Between 1972 and 1975, he achieved an extraordinary feat: seven albums reaching No. 1 in just three and a half years, a record surpassed only by The Beatles.
A historic moment for Rock in Rio
For Roberto Medina, president of Rock World — the company that created, organizes, and produces Rock in Rio and The Town — this moment is more than a show; it’s history being written for global music in Brazil.
“Rock in Rio was born to create unforgettable memories. We’re not just bringing Elton John back — we’re bringing a living legend.
Having him on our World Stage is an honor. His journey, legacy, and the power of his music embody everything Rock in Rio stands for: emotion, connection, and the transformative force of art.
Having Elton with us, after announcing his retirement from touring in 2023, reinforces the power of Rock in Rio to unite people through music and demonstrates the strength of this brand that carries Rio in its name.
2026 will be an emblematic year — and we’re thrilled to welcome one of the greatest artists of all time,” concludes Medina.
Beyond music
More than a performer, Elton John is a cultural icon. Since the 1970s, he has transformed the stage into a space of creativity and freedom — with extravagant costumes and iconic looks that influenced generations. His music transcends genres and eras, blending classical piano, pop, and rock with timeless emotion.
Elton has received 13 Ivor Novello Awards, five Grammys, two Oscars, one Tony, and one Emmy, achieving the coveted EGOT status in 2024. He has also been honored with the Kennedy Center Honors, the BRITs Icon Award, the Polar Music Prize, and Billboard’s Legend of Live award. He is a member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, alongside his lifelong collaborator Bernie Taupin.
In 1997, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, receiving the title of “Sir” Elton John.
Offstage, Elton shares Rock in Rio’s mission of building a better world. Through the Elton John AIDS Foundation, he has raised over US$450 million and funded programs across four continents — reaffirming his lifelong commitment to compassion and hope.
