‘Why on earth do I feel like this?’
I’ve probably asked myself that a thousand times, and I still don’t know. Perhaps the answer lies in thinking outside of the box, spreading your wings a little, accepting ideas and scenarios that would not normally sit comfortably with your own lifestyle.
Today, I have four tunes from Echoes and Nightmares, a conversation of a different kind brought to you by my friends Amongst Liars. It is the work of keyboard player and fifth Liar, James Brum, who is known for his innovative and creative vision. Take a wander inside his head, the home of the human condition, relationships and endless emotions, and absorb the delights that his cranial activity has to offer. Make yourselves at home and I’ll bring the tea and biscuits, because this is so chilled, yet the heat coming off this will melt your heart. With the help of his bandmates, Ian, Ross and Leo we get a full and finished product that reminds me of the 80’s synth bands.
A look at life and the misery it throws at us, without the aggression, without the volatility, let yourself be consumed by the gentle, tender arms that reach out to soothe you.
The first single is ‘Behind Close Eyes’ it has melancholic elements, there is a wistfulness, it gives us time to appreciate our deeper, more complex feelings and fears of subjects that many would not openly discuss. We are inundated with so many things in our lives that we do not make the time to really sit down and think. We are not prone to laying our hearts on the line, and when it comes down to the wire, we are not equipped with the sensibilities to deal with it with the subtlety and sensitivity it warrants.
These songs are unexpected, their perspective is contrary to what we are accustomed to, they are the ideal companion for those moments when you lose yourself. There is compassion, caring and an attentive quality which culminates in such proficient and thoughtful songwriting.
‘Show me how to love and I will not stop’
There is a tangible power in these words, they come from a place of hurt and regret and we hope they will ultimately lead to reconciliation and peace.
Taken from ‘I Can’t Do This’ the story weaves a tale of desperation, an attempt to put things right, all they ask for is a hand to hold and a sign from above. These vulnerable souls praying that their God isn’t deaf or blind.
With so much to lose and so much to prove, it takes every ounce of your being, every atom in your body to admit something so personal and sensitive.
‘I can’t do this alone’
I don’t believe anyone can.

P.S.
My echoes are my nightmares. They cross paths, they acknowledge each other, play havoc with my mind, then vanish at first light. Heaven forbid they should visit in my daymares.
