When did the initial idea for your latest album come together?
The idea for this album started during a breakup I was going through, and it evolved from some negative experiences I had in Los Angeles. That’s when the concept of experience tracks was born—using music to connect people through shared experiences. Everyone has dealt with loss or heartbreak, but it’s rarely discussed openly, leaving people feeling alone. I wanted to create something that brings peace and relatability to those emotions. They say the pain of heartbreak is equivalent to the pain of a bone breaking, and I wanted to capture that rawness.
How would you describe the album, to a reader that is unfamiliar with Gavi?
This album is an immersive journey that explores heartbreak, self-discovery, and resilience. It blends deeply personal storytelling with a diverse sound, making it accessible to anyone who’s experienced emotional highs and lows. Even if you don’t connect with the lyrics directly—though I think everyone will to some extent—there’s a wide range of styles on the album, so if you’re into anything near pop, there’s something for you here.
Can you tell us a bit more about the meaning behind the album?
The album is about understanding that you’re more than just a diagnosis. I was diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and let that label define me for a while. But I realized that what I was really feeling was the pain of my experiences. Instead of treating the diagnosis, I had to learn to process the experience and move forward. Psychology is powerful, but it’s essential to remember that both nature and nurture shape who we are.
How would you say that the album compares to anything you’ve done before?
It’s my most cohesive project yet. Lyrically and melodically, it sticks to a concept, but production-wise, it evolves throughout the album. I love that because it tells a story without becoming repetitive. It’s like the kind of music I enjoy listening to—it keeps you engaged and takes you on a journey.
What was the hardest part about putting it together, and why?
The hardest part was locking ourselves in the studio for an entire summer and going through countless versions of each song. My music partner, Micah, and I were relentless in perfecting the sound. Balancing that with the bigger vision—like planning to bring the album to life through animation—has been a huge challenge. We’re still working on finding a cohesive and doable way to tell the story visually.
Why should a reader check out the album?
This album is a shared experience. It’s about finding peace in life’s toughest moments and realizing that you’re not alone. The music itself is incredibly diverse, so there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re here for the story or just the sound, you’ll find something to connect with.
What else can you tell us about the album, that we haven’t covered in this interview?
We have big plans for this project. At some point, it will be brought to life through animation, and I’m excited to share the behind-the-scenes process as people get invested in the story. Micah and I poured so much into this—revising, refining, and crafting every moment—and I can’t wait to show some of the early edits and versions of these songs. This album is just the beginning of something much bigger.
